Default 306 XSi engine oil leak.

Trying to trace an engine oil leak on Anne's 1999 peugeot 306 XSi manual.

Its engine oil, not ATF or diff oil. About 6 mths ago had a similar leak, turned out to be the rear cambox cover.
It was running down the gearbox end of the block & then down the back of the block.
Fixed it and all was well for a while.

Now the leak is back. I've rechecked my work on the cambox and all is well there. Got the mirror out & checked the cambox to head joint. All good.

The oil is dripping from the engine side of the bell housing, but I haven't been able to track it back to the source.
Twice I've cleaned it to try to track it back.

Any tips on where to start looking? And thanks for all help.

Rear main seal? I know you wrote engine side...but worth a thought.

My main seal was leaking also. I have the gearbox out and replaced it now no leak.

    Sounds like the same problem.

Thanks for your replies. Cam, how big a job is the rear main seal? Engine out to do it or can I remove the auto trans & flex plate and get to it?

I'm a (ex) mechanic with a good technical grounding,so it should be within my capabilities.

    Cheers,

    Chris
