    Default Help! 406 S3 Coupe

Has anybody had experience of 406 V6 2003 Coupe with intermittent "moan" (suspected) from RH Drivers side wheel area when exerting lateral force on the car such as going around a sweeping right hand bend. Not tyres. Nothing appears to be adrift underneath? Thank you.

Does this happen when you are by yourself too? (sorry could not resist! ).

Sounds a bit like may be a shock absorber, how many kms has the coupe done?

Bounce the car up and down on the front guard each side (Push on a solid bit don't dent it).

    Good luck.

    1. Got enough power steering fluid in it? Are there any bubbles in the PS fluid?
    2. Wheel bearing?

yep. Wheel bearing would be my first guess. I had something similar (albeit on a 203) and there was no apparent slack in the bearing with the wheel on the ground, but when I spun it jacked up you could hear it.

I have had success in diagnosing wheel bearing issues by driving slowly 20-30 kmph and gently swerving from left to right, thus loading each side in turn, the sound should increase as the faulty bearing is loaded and vice versa when unloaded. Good luck

    Funnieeee!
This might be a bit too technical for you but I'll give it a try and get back. Can't quite see how a shock absorber could make the noise because it is a constant moan. I'll jump on the bonnet a few times that should do the trick -eh! I'll let you know.

See photo below of KONI shock absorber. The hard chrome on the shaft had worn right through and the car made the same noise you have described under the same conditions (Believe it or Not). The shock's top seal finally let go and dumped it's oil. It was not "too technical" for me to find the source of the noise then.

Good luck with your problem and don't forget to post what you finally find is your (car's) problem.

I don't entirely understand? Obviously I'm doing this "thread" thing wrong. What does Multi quote this message mean?

I had a ride in the car, and agree the issue is a puzzler. It doesn't happen every time, so is hard to duplicate on demand.
What a lovely car. You wouldn't think it's done as many ks.
406 manual coupes are a real gem, especially in nice condition.
