    Default 1972 504 Automatic - chasing a gasket set

    Hi All

The ZF auto in my 504 has been leaking oil quite badly over the last 12 months. Up on the hoist today and it is leaking from everywhere - speedo drive, selector shaft. front seal between bell housing and main section of the box, output seal, pan gasket etc.

The box is perfect apart from that! Drives very smooth and oil is very clean.

Does anybody know where I can source a gasket set for this model - ZF 3HP22?

    Thanks heaps
    Andrew

try also the local BMW dealer, as those trannies were used in BMW too.

wrote down the wrong auto number - it is a ZF 3HP20, and yes after some googling, BMW's shared this box.

I was able to fit a new pan gasket and a new o ring on the speedo drive, so will see how this goes. This was the main source of the leaks.

    Thanks

This is very interesting as I have a ZF3HP12 automatic tranny on my US spec 74 504 GL that similar shifts very smoothly yet has leaked from the same places for many years. The transmission shops I have spoken to will not touch this thing, wont even take the pan off, as they say they have yet to take one apart that goes back together suitably. So you had no issues getting it back together properly?

I recently replaced the pan gasket and filter in a 3HP22, very easy even with shaking hands, it all got together properlu although the dipstick tube is now leaking a little.

I have found two places in Germany that say they stock a full rebuild kit for the ZF 3HP20 Automatic Transmission I am just checking with them to see what each kit actually contains. I obtained a pan gasket and speedo drive o ring from my local Auto transmission place here in Brisbane (Action Transmissions) These were easy to replace.

I am yet to pull the box out (this car is my daily driver!) I will wait until I have the parts.

    The places in Germany are:

    www.wallothnesch.com

BMW Parts and BMW Accessories | Bavarian Autosport

I have also just found this place (US site):

    http://cobratransmission.com/index.p...&keyword=3hp20

and it lists the ZF 3HP12 and ZF 3HP20 as the same.

Will hopefully here back from them tonight
