Default 306 8v head gasket cost?

A friend of mine has a 95 306 in need of a head gasket.

Notwithstanding head warpage or the like, what is a reasonable price to expect to pay for whipping the head off and replacing the offending gasket?

I know the engine quite well being a TU (similar to BX), but is this a reasonable to approach home job?.. (I am quite adventurous)

    Advice please puggers..

I did a head gasket on my N3 earlier this year. Had I known what the cost was going to be, I might have thought twice!
You need the gasket set, new head bolts, exhaust manifold kit. I also replaced the timing belt, seals, water pump. Approx cost $450.00
The cost to do the head was in the region of $550.00.
It's easier to get another motor (if you can find one), but it should at least have a new timing belt. You have to weigh up the cost against the risk of an unknown motor.

    Those prices! Holy smoke!

If you're on a really tight budget you'll need to shop offshore for parts and accept you're chancing it with quality and delivery times.

NB: I've bought from both "eptg" and "shirley9293" before, the stuff is quite acceptable but not 100% OEM grade.

TU head gasket is a much easier job than an XU (the XU being the engine in all BXs except the BX14).

I wouldn't bother replacing the head bolts if you're doing it cheap. Ditto water pump. New cambelt only if needed.

If you want to reuse the head bolts, not advisable, torque them up to 65 lbs or so. Do NOT angle tighten as per the procedure.
They are designed to stretch when angle tightened, you don't want to do this a second time for obvious reasons.
They only cost about $40 or so.
Your car will have an XU motor I would have thought?
Water pump OK to reuse if it feels smooth and tightish to turn, same for tensioner, unless you know the belt is less than a year or so old then replace it, only $30 or so.
Go to Caravelle or EAI for parts.

If the engine is basically good (i.e. not an original 1994 with piston slap), it's worth rebuilding. If the head's straight and you can do the re grind, the only tricky bit would be setting up the cam.
I bought a 1994 306 new and it like almost all of them needed an engine rebuild under warranty due to the wrong pistons being fitted in the factory.
