Default Sydney Mechanic - PQ, Colliers or other?

    Hi all

Yes I know this question has been covered many times - please forgive.
Can a "Sydney Mechanic" sticky be added?

I'm looking for some guidance on where best to get a few pieces of work done.
From reading the forums I've come across recommendations for PQ and Colliers. Are these two still my best options?
    I'm based in the CBD/Alexandria.

    I have a Peugeot 206 XT 2004 (80k KM's) and I think it needs:

    - new timing belt (squeaking noise when the engine is cold especially when in gear)
    - oil leak from engine (need diagnostic)
    - petrol smell (prior mechanic says its oil dripping onto the hot exhaust. It smells like petrol to me)
    - air con not working (there was a hissing sound intermittently especially when first turned on)

    Any other advice very welcome!

Thank you and sorry for this being my first post.

    Michael

PQ are fantastic .... Very honest, thorough and diligent. What they don't know abt Pugs is not worth knowing. Have not used Colliers, so please don't take this as me preferring PQ to them I just don't know them that's all.

    Ap automotive in Carlton.

Paul Vassalo is an old school guy, hand written receipts etc. Owns french cars himself also.

Have had dealing with all three mentioned. All the work can be done by all mentioned.

Most of that list can be done by any mechanic au fait with modern cars. It's not that different to a Vectra or Lancer of similar age.

The air con can be more interesting, you ideally look at it with a diagnostic interface to see what's going on. They should hold gas and work for ten or more years, so a non-function is unlikely to be wear and tear but a specific event.

    Thanks guys.

Interesting you mention the aircon Addo. The last mechanic basically said there's a leak, but couldn't find it. He had a few goes at fixing it.
Mind you he also had a few goes at fixing the the oil leak without success - pretty frustrating.

I've used Colliers and Paul Vassalo, I'd recommend Paul The only issue with Paul is the waiting time. Sometimes up to a month to get a booking.

I also recommend Paul Vassalo at Carlton, he is such a perfectionist with his work. As Wintermut mentioned, you can wait for two - four weeks for a booking.

    G'day,
petrol smell could be a cracked fuel pump. Do a search on the forum. There are at least two threads. I have had two faulty pumps. Fixed now.

I'm happy to recommend PQ, I've been using them for about 6 years. Good guys! Honest and reliable and they won't over-service.

I ended up trying Paul at AP as he was closest to me.

cam85, Wintermute and Rikenman thank you so much for the recommendation.

So far it seems he's done a fantastic job. Not cheap but probably saved my hide between a significant petrol leak and a front right held on (barely) by two of the four bolts. There was a long list of other issues which Paul patiently took me through one by one.
The car feels totally different to drive. I didn't realise how bad it had become.....

    Great news

My old man has always said, if you find a good mechanic and a good Doctor, hang on to both of them
Any day I wake up and don't have to go to work, is a good day
Every day is a good day

I'll put my hand up for Colliers. Always get my big jobs like suspension and belts done by them. Never a problem!
