03 406 hdi wagon auto

Am looking at this car tomorrow ,would this be an al4 trans[ add says it a sports gearbox ] ,and how do i tell which engine it has in it , is it obvious ,pugs

VIN will tell all. Gearbox ID also by shape of oil cooler. The 4HP20 has a longish oil cooler located more or less on the box top. The AL4 has a smaller blobby oil cooler located towards the gearbox back.

I think it's going to be the al4 and it should be the 110 hp dw10 motor

Iv had an al4 in a scenic; so douse the 4hp20 have a better track record ,im chasing up the vin ,who do i go to with the vin to find out ,without being a pain in the ass ,on line possibly, pugs

He has said it has a "sports automatic" not sure what that means.

There is a photo of the engine bay if that offers any clues to those in the know.

We are keen for something larger that is better long range than our 00 scenic. The AL4 does not seem like a worthwhile risk.

We are looking at it tomorrow afternoon if you can offer any advice before then it would be much appreciated.

That looks like the HDi110 (due to intercooler pipework), with an AL4 (edge of black cover to valve body visible).

Thought the 406 HDi only came with the 110 in Australia, yes the turbo piping to the intercooler gives it away. You'll feel the boost come in around 1500 RPM. Other than the usual things to ask like when the timing belt was last done and checking the aircon works, a few common issues:

Check for play in the suspension by pulling the tops of the wheels away from the body, the complex suspension is cheap to repair but non specialists get scared off by it.

The volume control dial on the radio wears and stops working, you are then stuck with the stalk controls or replacing the head unit (needs an adaptor to fit the fascia).

Airbag light coming on is a common problem with loose/corroded/worn plugs under the seats, don't worry about that one but handy to bargain the price down. The light should come on momentarily when switching the ignition on but then go out, any other on/off combination is a fault/fail.

Ask if the fuel (lifter) pump has been replaced, another common failure on the x06 HDi models.

Better to miss out on it if it was the AL4 gearbox, from what I've heard.
