Default Series 1.5 MI16 Troubles warming up

    G'day team,
A while ago I purchased a 1990 mi16. It's unregistered but I'm nearly finished cleaning it up to get it back on the road. The issue is during the warming up stage. It runs fine when dead cold, no starting issues. Runs fine when hot, but it idles around 950 to 1000 rpm which I thought to be a bit a high. Anyway, when the temp gauge hits 60 deg is when it starts running poorly. Sounds like it's about to stall unless I keep the revs up, even with the revs up it misses and carries on a bit. As the temp gauge comes over to 80+ deg is when it idles ok on its own. I have cleaned out the idle control valve, this improved it but hasn't fixed the issue.
    Any ideas would be appreciated!

Maybe the Oxygen sensor. Two quick checks, 1: Pull the Oxygen sensor cable connections apart and ensure they are clean inside, ie water and or gunk (the sensor is located in the exhaust pipe just past the manifold connection). 2:Take the car somewhere that a bit of noise does not matter, - out of gear and hold the car on about 4000rpm for about 4 minutes. This should clean anything off the oxygen sensor. See how it performs after. these are both free to do.

If these two checks don't help you will have to wait for some of the experts to comment!

I seem to recall having the same issue on one of my old Series 1 cars, I think the issue was the coolant temp sensor, it was giving a bad reading in the warm up phase and causing the car to run either lean or rich (can't remember now). Worth a shot though, I think I may even have a good spare one in Hobart if need be. I've got a bit of other Series 1 stuff too if you need anything, I only have Series 2 cars now.

    Cheers

    +1,
Another easy/cheap one to check. make sure it has one and that it works. I had one fail on the way to snow and the only way I got performance out of the engine was to cover half the grille with plastic. Of course I replaced the offending part at first opportunity.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Wildebeest, I have already changed the thermostat due to a cooling issue I had so that's not it.
Looks like I will be changing the coolant temp sensor next then. I should able to get hold of one up here. Thanks heaps for the offer of the parts Pug_405_Mi16. I will keep that in mind if I need anything

Still no good with the idle issues. I tried the coolant temp sensor, still runs poorly through the warm up stage. I took it for a good old fang to try and clean it out a bit but still no good.
I will have to get hold of a code reader because every time I turn it on the check engine light illuminates. So I'd like to know what codes are being generated. It also idles too high when warmed up, like 1000 rpm, I tried the idle adjustment screw but it made no difference. I wound it right out but it wouldn't idle any lower.
    Anyone's opinion would be helpful.
    Thanks team.
