    Default 205 gti

I am considering the purchase of a 1993 205 GTI series 3 that has been sitting in a shed for the last 4 years.
It is white has a sunroof and has done 211,000 km with books in the glovebox. The body is very straight, the reflector panel s not broken, all the interior plastics including dash and glove box are excellent, and the seat bolsters have wear but are not torn.It was driven and left and was running well when parked.
    The questions are:
    1. What should I expect to pay for it?
    2. Are there any issues with these engines if they have sat for a while?
    Many Thanks,
    David

Sounds like a bloody good find to me. As you describe it, all the difficult bits are in good shape. All the possibly bad bits like the rear beam, front suspension bushes are pretty easy to find, relatively inexpensive and pretty easy to replace if you know your way around a set of spanners.

Difficult to give you a good number but maybe $5k if its really in good shape?

As for the engine, the 8v lump is pretty hardy. My old engine sat in the corner of the garage for at least 2 years, was put in another car, started first time and is still going well to my knowledge.

If you're in Sydney I can take you for a drive in my car, then you'll be praying the 8v is stuffed and looking for a 16v donor car :-D If you're not inclined to that option I know of at least one bloke on here who has three 8v motors in his garage at last count. I'm sure he would be pleased to be rid of one!

    Great advice from Pat.

If the body is straight and the interior is good its worth buying. Mechanically they are fairly easy to get right. Main areas being the rear beam and front bushes. Shockes will be dead if old. Dont worry too much about the engine. Spin it around a few times with no plugs to get the oil around and go from there.

Just buy and sort it out later! Sounds like. Really good find!

I personally think that $5k would be the top end for a car that has been sitting for 3 years - there has to be soem reason it was laid up, and there WILL be lots of things that need to be sorted. On my limited experience of sorting a vehicle that has been left sitting for a long time, you may need to go right through the brake system and may need to spend a bit of time to get it running smoothly again. But I think Pat and Cam are right - sounds like a fantastic candidate for a 16v conversion!

i think that sounds ambitous at the moment. madly scrambling to try to get clients happy before Christmas. Everything has to be done before Christmas, even though you know it will just sit on their desks until February!!

Yeah, maybe $5k is a bit of a stretch but there can't be that many S3 cars for sale these days that are in really good shape, especially in the body and interior stakes.
