    Default 205 drive shaft rebuild..

hi guys so I found the clunking noise in my 205, it was the left hand drive shaft. it seems that one of the 3 bearings on the drive shaft had come loose and disintegrated which caused the knocking sound. so I went to Belconnen gearbox and driveline to possibly order a new one. they are no longer available... so my only choice was to get it rebuilt. I dropped it off on a Monday and on the Tuesday I got a call saying they needed $50 for shipping, that was fine. after 2 weeks it has finally arrived.. after not being quoted and left waiting for two weeks it comes back as a $450 dollar job... I have not picked up the shaft yet so I don't know if its been completely rebuilt or just a bearing replaced and a boot. I knew it wouldn't be cheap but damn.. any others had this done and come back so expencive. cheers

Freight from UK doesn't look too bad in light of those prices.
I'm guessing you are referring to series 3?
If its series 1 then you can use Si shafts.

Im getting the smallest of back alley shops in Artarmon (with no signage or yellow pages entry) to do mine, even had a 205 si shaft on the shelf, identified it was the wrong one, and said he would just fix it for me, 120 a side. I'll report back when ive put them in..

so ive been screwed massively. the guy at the counter was quite nice and did all he could to source me a GTI shaft. my gearbox is a BE1 and the car is series two. he was able to source SI shafts new. and $500 dollars for a fixed bearing is just robbery

I recently paid around $400 for a rebuild fully installed. You would think the later model shafts would be available off the shelf.

Canberra Tax - people complain about the PS getting paid a lot here, they forget everything in this dump costs twice as much...

240 for pretty much new shafts from this guy from artarmon! he said it was impossible that they werent noisy (i thought it was my wheel bearings) so yeah 2 new shafts and im happy, although I cant imagine he would do that price again, prices are 120 per shaft for a basic reco which id imagine includes new boots. The joints extra depending on what you require

GTi series 1 and Si shafts are exactly the same.
