    Default 206 GTi

    Hi everyone,
Looking at a 1999 206 Gti with 251000 on the clock, have not looked at it as yet.
Any suggestion whether this a good car or stay away from this.
This is to be used as a daily drive to work and back so i want something reliable of sorts and something to play with as well wink wink.
    thanks

Hi, I would say do the usual things, check if she has any service history, has had any crash repairs, when was the cam belt last changed, discs and pads replacements, those kind of things mainly. I have a 180 and I had to hunt around pretty hard to find one which wasnt a dog in one way or another, and for me just looking down the sides of the car panels and the test drive gave a lot of info on how much care the owner has given the car. Good Luck!

I don't think kms mean much at all. As long as the car has been well maintained it doesn't matter

I'd rather a high km country car than a low km city car

I agree, re the country kms. Mrs Patpug's 207hdi has 60 thousand on the clock, mostly country kms and its still like new.

A mate just bought a Mazda 3 MPS with 300 thousand + kms from a country sales rep with full service history etc and it's in great shape, and cheap.

Look for dust under the seals etc...

I don't know about you but I think it makes this car an absolute bargain. Peugeot 206 gti

The usual Peugeot things go wrong - noisy front lower control arms and even trailing arm bearings go bad eventually like the older 205 model.

The exhaust manifold can be noisy because of its design too.

Other than usual service history stuff, I'd be suspicious of a 206 GTi with air con that doesn't work. The pipes fail on these and because of how they are routed on the GTi can mean engine removal to replace them.

Possibly the only other "grey area" that is quite expensive on these is the COM2000 unit in the steering column (especially on early models like a 1999). Check the lights, horn and indicators work properly as it's a potentially expensive fix. Do a search for COM2000 for some hints.

Timing belt interval is 80,000km or 4 yrs.

Check out the (now getting quite old) 206gti.net FAQ for more questions.
    Regards,

    Simon

Good news is early 206's didn't have com2000's. Just normal headlight switches. which to me makes them the pic of the bunch!

Of course I knew that - early (1999-2000) models were exempt from the nightmare. Thanks for the reminder

The early (15" 5 spoke) alloys were better too. Much lighter and (more importantly) very easy to clean
