Default 205 sway bar drop links

    Hi all.

Is there a difference in stability of a sway bar drop link that is 16mm to that which is 11mm??

Was there a difference between the s1/2 and the s3?

If I recall my s1.5 had slimmer drop links.

My s3 has 16mm dia ones but you can only buy 11mm through parts suppliers (Melbourne)

    Anyone come across this?

I've seen this a few times over the years. I think the length is the thing that's important. I usually just try to match them if there's an odd set. Perhaps OE v Aftermarket? I think some of the cheaper ones the joints don't last as long.

You are correct, since it is a long and slender member it is prone to buckling (stability failure) when loaded in compression. The critical buckling load is directly proportional to the second moment of area of the cross section which changes with the fourth power of the diameter. The link will be subjected to a relatively large compresive forces when the suspension is compressed under heavy cornering. If the link buckles the anti-roll bar efficiency would be decreassed. My S2 had the thicker links but the ball joints developed play and I had to change them. I couldn't get my hand on some thick ones, so if you find them let me know.

I changed mine on my s2 yesterday. Couldn't find thicker ones so I got some slimmer ones from the UK off eBay. Same length dimensions and they seem to be doing the job quite well as a replacement

Just got the drop links I ordered. Holy hat they are heaps slimmer! 5mm is heaps.

Haven't heard of the brand before either. First Line.

Same height, a little bit different joints. Is it worth holding on to these? They are the about the same dia where it starts to neck on the original link. Do you think it effect the steering that much?
