    Default 2 questions re 1989 405 MI 16 1.9 litre

I'd be grateful for some help with 2 questions please:

    1. I want to do an oil change but am puzzled how to remove the sump plug; is there a specific type of spanner or tool available?

    2. I have a noisy speedo, that gives a whirring sound and the needle vibrates annoyingly. Does anyone know of a DIY cure or is it a job for experts?

    Thank you

    David from Sydney

There's an 8mm square tool for the plug. Try Bursons or Repco, else contact Newtools in Blacktown. Speedo cables dry out and cause flutter, replace with new and use third party heat shielding.

Have you got a decent filter and new crush washer?

Like Addo said you can get a tool.

I use one of these, but all you need is small piece of square section steel and file/grind to size and turn with a spanner.

I am not familiar with 405 in terms of access to the cable. If the access (particularly at the instrument cluster end) is ok it is normally a simple process.

The sump plug on my Mi16 chewed up one of those crappy multi fit tools and twisted one I made from mild steel so I gave up and bought the proper fitting tool in hardened chrome vanadium steel from EAI....under $20 and worth every cent!

Never had speedo cable trouble on mine...which is just as well as I had enough fun with the clutch cable to do me for a while!!!

Speedo cable replacement is not pretty. Gearbox end is easy enough. Just remove the plastic pin and withdraw the cable vertically. The other end however, requires access to the instrument cluster. So the binnacle needs to be removed. Get the new cable first so you can see what holds it in place.

He can probably eyeball mine as the cluster is not yet installed.
