    Default 205 Gti window fix

My passenger window in my 205 will go down, however it won't come back up. Sometimes if you find the sweet spot it will decide to work. Anyone know which part I need to replace? I need it in action for summer! Much appreciated

Do you suspect electrics or mechanicals? I would give it a good going over with lube for mechanicals and contact cleaner for electrics and take it from there.

I suspect electrics, i took it to an auto electrician and although he didn't seem too great at his job he said it needed a new motor. Thought i'd check for any other opinions before i went and bought one.

If you are not afraid to pull apart the motor, most of the time new brushes and a comm skim is all it takes to bring back to life a tired old motor. Okay, perhaps a good lube too.

Cleaning contacts/couplers and so on (perhaps refreshing soldered joints if any) is another strategy that cannot go astray (cheap insurance if you will).

Make sure you keep the tracks clean too.

start with something simple and cheap. can of contact spray on all 3 switches (window wont work if passenger switch unplugged, found that out assing around) then try a switch, 20 bucks later...you'll know if you need to spend 3 figures on a motor + installation, or checking the wiring in the door connectors
The wrong oil is better than no oil at all.

The problem is the switch or switches. It was for me.. I opened the switches cleaned them out and cleaned the contacts and all good for 4 years.... Now they are due again... I have to put up my passeger window from the passenger side switch.... Pain in the backside!!

I had a similar problem when I first got my 205. It turned out to be the multi-pin plug within the door hinge had taken some water and corroded the terminals. Use a pair of multi-grips over a rag to unlock the plug and separate the two. Clean and lube with inox or whatever.....

I have found that the inside plastic moulding/rubbers expand (I think) and jam the window so it wont go up. Only the French could make a car where a component can go wrong in 10 different ways....

I've had every other problem with my windows, apart from problems with switches, so I expect they'll catch fire in the coming days.

Changed the entire regulator/motor on the drivers side the other day. Had to get an honours degree in physics before I could work out how to get the thing out and back in again. In the process I managed to jam my thumb in the scissor mechanism...took quite a few seconds of searing pain before I realised the button I was pushing with my left thumb was causing the slow severing of my right thumb. After that episode I had to use all my powers of cunning and deduction to ensure I didn't stick my head through the open window whilst raising the window.

I was playing around with it today and it was working fine, so maybe the moulds expanding was the problem back when i got it (havent tried it for months). I tested it till it was about 2/3 the way down and it came back up fine. Didn't want to risk going any further

The expanding theory is very likely. Not sure what the cure may be, but I have the same problem with the heater fan. On a cold winter morning, when turned on before the engine temperature is up it sounds like a dog going through the mincer. After enough hot air has blown through the housing expands enough that the noise goes away. That's the only cure I could find.

Try some teflon spray on the channels. It won't stop them expanding, but it will make them slippery. I use that stuff. Granted, my windows work, so not sure if it makes any difference but I figure it can't hurt.

I worked it out by spraying some crc against the glass, next to the upper plastic strip. This was after I replaced the switches and motor etc, doh! not sure how to fix it, other than grinding the plastic back by 1-2mm

205 1.6 gti's have wind up windows (optional electric back in the day) so you will find loads of 1.6's over there with wind up windows just the mechanism and winder is all that is needed...
