Default Should we wreck this 406 diesel

    This just came.

It's a 98 406 STDT 7 seater wagon, runs very well, beleive it or not it has been sold the us because the alternator has failed, otherwise its fine. injection pump has a very slight weep in it, not even a leek, just a weep.
Its done about 350,000km and with a new alternator will probably do 350,000 more.

Why didn't it turn up 12 months ago when I needed an engine for mine

Before people start ringing the tow bar and the cross bars on the roof rack are mine alright
    There going on my car

it has a proper gearbox,if it was 50,000 rather than 350,000kms I'd be interested (did you miss the bit about the weeping "EPIC FAILURE" pump)

Go for it 'Rambo ..................... Just start saving for the pump. I'll sell you an XM with a bosch mechanical pump and injectors for $1500 bucks to go with it Just don't drive the XM first, or you won't be able to lower yourself to 406 travel

The pump was replaced 4 years ago with a second hand one from the UK, cost $600 landed.

Shane, the speedo doesn't work (typical 406 problem) and the owner did what I did and bought a GPS and uses that as a speedo so I could say its only done 50,000 and no one could prove me wrong.

The engine is excellent, smooth, quiet and doesn't blow any smoke, gearchange is smooth and light.
I've never heard of one of these gearboxes failing, even my car which is up to 500,000 still feels nice to use so its still worth considering if you want to fix your XM.

Just don't drive the XM first, or you won't be able to lower yourself to 406 travel

Hmm I'm not so sure about that, I've driven them both and I think the 406 will surprise you. In my mind the only real advantage the Citroens have is the self leveling and adjustable ride height, as for the ride itself, the 406 does a pretty darn good job

I think I forgot to mention it does have hail damage, only on the roof, the bonnet was replaced but it's a little rough, in the pics it looks fine but it is there.

Who in the hell wants a breathless thirsty gutless weezy 2litre when you could have a 2.1TD. The 12valve 2.1 motors a bloody GEM. It's hauls arounds a 1.5+ton XM through a slugomatic gearbox quite well. At 150,000miles I did the headgasket in the one here. The motor looks completely unworn inside. The bores were still heavily cross hatched from the factory. I recon at 350,000kms the motor would almost be run in.

Only a crazy person would take the weezy 2litre petrol over the all mechanical, low tech turbo deisel. Your old renolt 21 wouldn't see which way this wagon went, and would make a lot more pollution in doing so while using a shitload more fuel.

someone who doesn't want to return the favour of being stuck behind a stinky toxic fume machine... The new ones are bad enough, old school ones like this should be illegal.

I seriously don't know what planet you live on. ULP and LPG cars of the vintage of the XM here stink far more than it. The XM only blows smoke on startup ..... 'cos there is usually a couple of seconds cranking where no fuel is being burnt. I can't even remember the last time I saw a diesel passenger blow smoke on the roads .... let alone a truck. The old CX wagon used to blow smoke ... It was easy, just floor it up a hill and you'd get clouds of unburnt fuel out the back ( very handy that What do you expect from a 1976 vintage diesel .... Is this what your thinking modern cars are?)

Smoke blowing == unburnt fuel == wasted fuel. No-one is going to waste something that costs money. There's not a hope in hell you could tell a C4 is diesel or petrol by smell or exhaust colour. Your really living in a dream world.

I put money on you couldn't pick if even a locally built ford territory is petrol/gas/diesel without going and reading the badges on the bloody thing..... Infact I'm bloody positive on this point. that's using the ancient single turbo C6 v6 diesel from a years back too.

    Default 406 speedo fix

We worked out what goes wrong with the 406 speedo. Was in a post a few years ago, but was lost. We will see if we can dig up the file.

Haakon, at least people don't die from diesel fumes. Petrol will kill you and has killed thousand of people since unleaded was introduced.

They're all pretty nasty. Petrol probably kills more simply by virtue of its wider use, but on unit of consumption basis diesel at best is no better and likely worse.

So we agree it comes down to which way you'd like to die.

Personally what I like about my 406 is that its so relaxing to drive, just sitting on 110 up the freeway at 2200 rpm and the engine is so quiet. Its a nice way to travel after all the hassle of day to day grunge.

Petrol engines sound like there working to hard to do the same job.
