    Default 406 4hp20 query...

Hi all, as I have said in the past, I have a 406 sv needing an auto trans transplant. For the past 12 months, the pug has been resting at my in-laws 'country estate' waiting for the chance to find its feet again. I have sourced a transmission from a 406 couPe but before I sign off on the purchase I am after some advice on if this marriage of coupe trans and sv body and engine is compatible?

    Thanks, Nicholas.

Did they say why? Their answer might help the bloke a few posts down looking for a similar unit.

i think it depends on numbers

they both share the same box/ part number depending on vin/production number

The trans i found is in Townsville area after chatting to a guy through ebay. he is selling a V6 coupe for parts, with the engine on offer, vehicle still running and had about 110k on the odometer. he offered $900 for the trans plus freight, (about $120 through e-go.com.au). what is your price on the trans you have, it would be good if it is in a similiar condition. My in-law has offered to change over the transmission but he has not got it out yet. i will have a chat with him if he can have a look for me.

Looking at the ZF catalog (http://webcat.zf.com), the model number should be 1019 000 009 or 1019 000 044. (that fits with D8 model 406 SV's)

the 009 trans is no good to me.

had been recond and had solenoid upgrade last year, but will confirm this before i say it is available.

I know when I did my 306 auto gearbox is was about 500 or so bucks extra to get it recoed if u exchange boxes. This was a while ago so I'm not to sure what running prices are now, tho I did learn that the gearbox numbers must match whether or not they are from the same model. Also on carsales there was a 406 diesel with a seized engine for just over a grand maybe look into that if it's still there. I'd just research all your options including getting rid of the car. Unless you love the thing doing a gearbox is a huge expense and headache, even more so if your mechanic isn't a French car specialist or enthusiast.

P.s make sure it's a mechanical fault not electrical before you buy a box for the love of god, I say this from experience.
