I forgot to mention that I also have 2 early style 404 heads for sale (4 welsh plug style heads).

One is in excellent condition and I'd like $50 or nearest offer.

The other has one crooked sparkplug thread helicoil and I'll take what ever I'm offered for it (or I'll throw it in with the other head).

I just checked. The good head is a 66 model with the big valves.

The other one is a 63 with the small valves and short spark plug thread.

    Dave,
I will be driving to Sydney in January and will take the early head off your hands. I use these inlet valves in my hot 1600 403 motor.
Are the springs in the (South African) struts any different from usual?
    Regards Graham

    Graham,

Your welcome to have the early 404 valves. They're not actually in the head at the moment, but we've got them sitting in a box under the house.

I haven't actually got any South African struts lying around (they're 67/68 model Australian struts). I have heard that South African springs are stiffer and I believe it, because my South African 404 had a pretty stiff and bumpy ride.

    How's the 505 V6 going?

    Regards,
    Dave

There was a time I could have given him a lifetime supply, eh Dave?

    Ray,

Yeah, you used to have a lifetime supply of almost all 404 and 504 parts at Silverdale. Did you end up selling it all or did some go to the tip?

Lots to the tip, and not at my behest either...

There wasn't much 504 stuff though.

    Dave,
I have just got back from a trip to Euroa in the V6 (checking out a 1968 404 which I have bought from the 85 year old second owner) It is going very well, certainly didn't notice any of the hills! A little more sorting, Torsen diff. etc. and it will be ready for next year. Do you still have the South African springs?

    Regards, Graham

    Graham,

Sorry, the only South African stuff I have is the engine, heater and possibly a few other small items. The springs, etc, I sold with the car (I put a 1.8 litre 504 engine in it, and pulled the heater out to save weight). The last I heard, that car was sitting in the yard of a Buddist environmentalist bloke near Adelaide.

What mods does your 1600 403 engine have?

    Dave,
Just about everything. Twin 40 DCOE, 30-70 cam, extractors, big valves, lightened flywheel etc. It goes and sounds great! I gave a rally prepared Alfa 105 a big fright when I beat him on a 200 metre side by side go to whoa in a classic rally a couple of years ago. It is very competitive in Khanacross style events and the occasional Autocross, top ten at the Ballarat track ahead of some four wheel drive turbos and V8 Commodores.

    Regards, Graham

OK, here's an updated list of what I have available:

-XC7 1618cc engine (7.6:1 compression), from 1973 South African 404, about 150,000km since new piston and liner kit, see and hear running on test stand (and see compression figures on gauge). Radiator included (but no aircleaner or alternator).
    $350 or near offer

-404 head in good condition from 1966 model (i.e. has the later bigger valves, longer sparkplug threads, but has 4 welsh plugs)
$50 or near offer (including extra head without valves), or free with above engine.

-right rear quarter panel, free (slight dent in it)

-3 windscreens (non-laminated toughened glass), free

    -2 rear windows, free

    -4 early 404 wheels, free

    -grille, free
