    Default Wanted - 8 valve 405 engine

For a mates 89 (i think) 405. I have no idea what management they run - will a 205 engine work?

Anyway, if anyone has anything could they just reply here.

    Thanks

Cheers peter. What do you have?

Also, do you know how they differ from the 205gti engine? I am wondering if i should make him an offer on the shagged engine to warm up for the 205...

These engines have a completely different head (downdraft ports) and manifold.
This means you can't simply put the 405 manifold and injection onto a 205 engine, so you may have to do some wiring work to adapt the 205 ECU to the 405 wiring loom.

Are you sure Graham? That sounds very unusual. Al, please check the 3 letter code on the block.

I can't unfortunately as it isn't my car, but it is an early boggo 405. (the one with just the 405 badge on the boot) I was under the impression the JAZ (or whatever it is) was fitted to the later ones... (but i really know nothing about this)

Was it a 205 engine you have peter?

    Peter and Al,
The JAZ is fitted to the later cars, this is a series 3 205 engine, the early ones have their own engine. It has bit of a following in the UK where I have seen some posts referring to the 405 SRi engine. The ports are in a straight line with the valves but failrly small.

Hi, my old 205 donk is in an 89 405 but was fitted with the 205 inlet manifold etc and the 405 engine management (Motronic instead of Jetronic which was on the 205). I didn't do it but understood it wasn't too difficult. I ca suss out detail if necessary.

    Cheers

Both of those heads have square ports Peter, the early 405s have round ports and are higher up the head giving a downdraft arrangement.
I may have to take some photos!

The pics. are only indicative. It didn't clear things up for me at all! There are five different 405 heads. I thought early 405's had the 75kW DFZ engine, then later went to the 90kW version.

Dunno if this link helps, but there appears to be quite a few engine types throughout the 405 range-

I'm quite confused... I'm also about to head up to brisbane for a couple of weeks, so i'll pass on this info and see what the guy thinks.

Surely a 205 engine would be better though? I've driven a few base model 405s, and they don't feel like they have the urge of the 205. (although that is probably due to the weight)

Not sure but 82 kw sounds familiar for the early engines.

Hi, I had a quick look at the early 405 donk I have here and it is a DFV - it has the round ports well up the head as described by Graham.

When the swap to a 205 motor (75kw) was done it had a square port inlet, like the pictures Peter posted, so the square port manifold was fitted and adapted to the rest of the 405 bits.

    Cheers

    Jim
