    Heater coils are not that expesive new, try reno pug wrecking in Melb, they may have a few secondhand ones.

    Given their reputation for longevity, and the hassle involved in replacing them, I would say spend the extra and get a new one

    I did some recon work on replacing it, it will be difficult, but not impossible.

    I disconnected the hose lines feeding it so the leak's all gone, but with these cold mornings i think i'll have it fixed real soon

    are you sure it is the core and not the "O" rings at the tap? If its not the o rings buy a new core from EAI, maybe coat the inside of the core with something before hand.
    I know of one 405 that has had 3 heater cores!!!!
    You can buy test strips for acidity and coolant effectiveness Castrol from Repco
    maybe worth while to prevent problems with coolant being corrosive
