Default R12'G' After its BIG 'Shunt'

Just found this file pic in my archives.

Taken in 1972. is a picture of MY beloved Renault 12 Gordini (Works car) after it's BIG reveres, double end-for-ender, during a round of the WA rally Championship.

That's me standing on the recovery trailer, about 8 hours after the crash.

car was rebuilt in my body shop (Eurocars Smash Repairs) before being driven back to Renault at West Heidelberg (Victoria)

This is SAME car that was once owned by David Cavanagha.

Car is now back in Perth and is owned by Tom Riley and is displayed regularly at french Car day.

    Hi Rod,

Many years ago when I was restoring it a guy walked in and spotted it sitting in a corner under a plastic sheet in undercoat and picked it as being your old car. He said he was on the service crew the night of the crash and pionted out where it had been welded and repaired.

He came back the next day with that same picture. I kept it in the Gordini scrap book and passed it on to Tom when he bought it.

Never got his name, a red haired guy from memory.

Yes, his name was Max Williams, and yes, he was on my service crew.

He used to come to the Speedway with me every Friday night for years. he was an aircraft engineer with Ansett.

He drove the 12G back to Melbourne for me, when it had to be returned to Renault. He later got transferred with his job to melbourne and he phoned me all excited one day saying that he thought he had re-discovered my old 12G in melbourne, I faxed him a copy of the original rego papers and he confirmed it was the same car

    Yes indeed.

I was the Renault Distributor, for Western Australia, at that time and I had a brand new, state of the art (for its time) body repair shop, with some real true craftsmen working in it.

Renault had 'loaned' me the car (one of only 6 in Australia) to run in the WA rally Championship in 1972, on the proviso that i maintained it at my expense and returned it to them, at the end of the campaign, in good working order.

So when I 'crashed it' then I had to 'fix it'

So i handed it over to my crew at Eurocars Smash Repairs, in Welshpool and said "boys, here's a challenge for you, do your best to make this 'look' like new", and they did bless 'em.
