Default Motor Racing Events You've Attended

Hello to all. I thought it would be interesting to share which motor racing events each of us have been to, and perhaps get realistic feedback of what people thought of them. Inspired by another thread where someone mentioned they are going to the Goodwood Revival which I'd love to go to someday.

    I've attended the following:

    1982 German GP, Hockenheim
1982 Swiss GP, Dijon Prenois (was a tad too young to remember much!)
    1987 Australian GP, Adelaide

    1988 World Sports Cars, Sandown

    1988 Australian GP, Adelaide
    1989 Australian GP, Adelaide
    1990 Australian GP, Adelaide
    1991 Australian GP, Adelaide
    1992 Australian GP, Adelaide
    1993 Australian GP, Adelaide
    1994 Australian GP, Adelaide
    1995 Australian GP, Adelaide

    1996 Australian GP, Albert Park
    1997 Australian GP, Albert Park
    1998 Australian GP, Albert Park
    1999 Australian GP, Albert Park
    2000 Australian GP, Albert Park
    2001 Australian GP, Albert Park
    2002 Australian GP, Albert Park
    2003 Australian GP, Albert Park

    2004 Le Mans 24hr
    2004 Belgian GP, Spa-Francorchamps
    2005 Australian GP, Albert Park
    2005 ARC Melbourne Rally, Melbourne

Never been to any races except when I was really young...
It was 16 years ago at the Macau F3 GP, I was nearly too young to remember. But it probably had the best talent ever on the field on that day. It was a day when schumacher won in controversial circumstance after having a come together with one Mika Hakkinen. Other young drivers such as Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Eddie Irvine, Mika Salo were also there just to name a few names.
It was a special year and a special race.

By the way many of the podium finisher from the past 15 odd years have progressed to F1. Coulthard (91'), Pedro Lamy & JV (92'), Jan Magnussen (94'), Ralf,Trulli, de la Rosa (95'), Enrique Bernoldi (97'), JB (99'), Sato (01'), Heikki Kovalainen (02'), Robert KUBICA (04')

    valentino,
the races on the nordschleife were the 24 hour races ,the vln pokal, the 1000km races and a split 1000 km (2x 500km) race at the eifelklassik (porsche 904,jaguar lightweight,etc)....in all the races are a lot of cars competing so there's always someone driving by....
as for the leader...waiting for 7 minutes is not a problem at all...
at a 24h race you have plenty of time to or or or even
when the race gets started you have 3 huge groups of cars taking off every 2 minutes...you also have a radio broadcast who is always with the top 10 (at least for the first couple of hours).apart from that ...there is so much going on next to the track...there are up to 200000 people and it's hard to imagine what it is like if you haven't seen it with your own eyes....whenever i go back to germany i make sure it is when the 24 hours is on because for me it is by far the
most exciting motorsport event i've ever been to.
    cheers marty

Wow, lots of interesting events that people have been to.
    Here's my list:

Many, many rounds of off-street drags at both Eastern Creek raceway and the WSID. I got to see the original MYT205 run down the 1/4 mile and beat a Walkinshaw VL
A few Top Fuel drag meetings at WSID (I never knew anything could be so loud that it actually shakes your eyeballs in their sockets )

A round of Nations Cup at Eastern Creek (can't remember what year)

    Premier state rally (NSW)
In 2003 (or was it 2002), I only watched on the friday night at Eastern Creek and it was so cold a friend got a brain freeze from eating a banana he had in his bag
In 2004 I went up to the forests on the Central coast to watch. They didn't have very many spectator areas...

A few of the CSCA supersprint rounds last year and this year with all those 205s at Eastern Creek and Oran park.

A few track days at Eastern Creek and Oran park to watch a friend ride his motorbike.

The last Bathurst 24hr race (2003?). It was fantastic hearing the Diablo's V12 howling down Conrod straight. Great seeing brake discs glowing at night especially on the XR6 Turbo that got the front discs to glow yellow

2005 A1 GP at Eastern Creek. Was watching the main race from turn 2 and 5 or 6 cars ended up going off there during the race. I also saw the Japanese driver go off at turn 1

And last but certainly not least:
2005 WRC Finland. I'm definitely going back to see it again, at the very latest in 2008.
    2005 Renaultsport Clio 182 Cup
    1989 205 Gti - Sold

I was in the grandstand at the first corner, pretty much on the entry (facing the pitlane) at Hockenheim in '82.
i was at the other side....usually opposite to the double right (opel kurve)before start/finish straight...
when didier pironi had his crash in the saturday morning training i remember looking down the straight into the forest just before it happened...
    not the best memories though...

306XT - I've heard that the Macau circuit is supposed to be one of the best in the world - up there with the Nordschlieffe, although I know little about it.

maybe everyone should be describing the atmosphere at the events, as that can make a big difference or seal the reason for checking out a race.

Like many here, I've probably been to so many events I'd struggle to remember half of them, but the earliest memory I have of my childhood (period) is sitting on the side of a mountain in New Zealand with my dad in about 1981 watching the Rally of New Zealand...

With an upbringing like mine I was never going to be anything other than a car nut...

Did anyone get to see the Group B rally cars when they were in action?

One thing to note about PLAYLIFE - he was born in 1980.... so attended his first F1 event at the age of 2.

What a great opportunity to be pretentious, I canít pass it up.

Earliest memories were watching the Rally of New Caledonia in 1970 and 1972, with Colin Bond and George Shepheard

    1975 and 1979 Bathurst 1000s
1983 Start of Paris Dakar on NY day
1983 Swedish ice racing grand final (only -10degrees)
    1987 was my favourite year:
    - Le Mans 24hr
    - German GP Híheim, cheapest ticket was at the first chicane in the forest
    - Spa 24 hr, Bob Holden was there, Brock and Moffat competing
    - Portugal GP, this is where Prost passed Jackie Stewartís GP total
    - Swedish Novemberkassan, day/night trailbike enduro thru snow and mud
    1988 Adelaide GP
1991 Bathurst 12hr, watching the Mi16s get beaten by Swift GTi and Pulsar SSS
    1998 Melbourne GP
    2000 Melbourne GP
    2001 Rally Australia
    2002 Rally NZ
    2002 Bathurst 24hr
    2003 Rally NZ
    2003 Bathurst 24hr
    2004 Rally Australia

Like many others, been to various state rounds of touring cars and rallies, particularly the execrable NSW rally on the central coast a couple of years ago.

Letís not stop at motor sport events. How about car shows? Been very lucky to go to Paris Salon 82 and 86, Geneva 83, London 87, the Centenary of Motoring at Northhampton in May 85.

On the subject of motors, car factories include Sochaux (lost count, 5 or 6 times), Mercedes, BMW, Volvo.

I note that N_B_J says: went to see a rally in Switzerland in the snow
Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that motor sport of any kind was banned in Switzerland, and has been for many years. That is why the Swiss GP was held at Dijon.

And to answer Valentino, several members of PCCNSW went to NZ in the mid 80s to see the 205 group B.

I haven't been out of Aust - and I have a few motor racing events I would like to see some day - Le Mans & Indy for example.

Considering I live in Perth I havent done too bad:

Some of my highlights were Bathurst 1971 & 1972 (that ages me!) with GTHO's and XU-1's. That was when it was Series Production (pretty much showroom standard), and before 95dba sound limits. Memorable hearing 60 cars coming up the hill and wondering who was going to be first across the mountain! Including Corollas, Mazda 1300's, Alfas, etc.

    Also Bathurst 1984,1986,1998.
    Adelaide GP 1985,1987.
Never been interested in going to Melbourne GP (M Schumacher was right at his first visit - "Its just a race track - nothing special" - upset Ron Walker).

Phillip Island & Sandown & Calder & Winton also in 1971/1972 when I lived in Melb for a couple of years.

And a few others, but one of the best events I have been to was the 2000 American Le Mans 6 hour on New Years Eve on the full Adelaide GP circuit. Love them sports cars! Standing inside the hairpin at night with the noise and the brake discs glowing - magic! This was also a meeting at a fraction of the cost of a GP and the atmosphere was pretty casual. That was worth the long drive.

I've mainly seen racing in Vic, including V8SC a few times at Winton and the Sandown 500 in 1997, probably 10 years of Winton Historics, nearly the same number of Philip Island historics, Sandown historics a few times, half a dozen Procar rounds (W, PI & S), drags a few times in the last year or two at Calder and Heathcote, a few ARC Rally of Melbournes, a few state/HRA events, a few motorkhanas & autocrosses (Somerton, Pakenham, Kyneton), hillclimbs at Arthurs Seat, Mt Tarrengower, Rob Roy, Morwell - I think that's covered most of it. Oh I had a look over the fence at the first Melbourne GP with a mate...

The highlight though would be the Adelaide Race of a Thousand Years in 2000.

If we're venturing outside the realms of motorsport, a friend of mine toured the Schlumpf museum (bet I've spelt that wrong) while it was seized by the textile workers in 1977!

Yep - RAC rally in the 80s. I saw Group B in the Welsh forests in 84 and 85, but 86 was the first time we (my bunch of mates) followed the whole event.

IMHO Group B was very overrated. Lots of spectacle in a straight line but even the works drivers generally used to "point and squirt" and back off for the bends. With the first car I saw on the RAC in 87 (the first after Group B was banned) ... think it was Arikkala in a Delta HF Turbo, Cropton Forest ... the cornering commitment was so much greater that I found it more spectacular overall.

Funny that people look back on Group B as some golden age. When Quattros and Group B was coming in everyone was complaining that rallying was becoming boring as they didn't hang the back out like an Escort, and having see the Roger Albert Clark rally last year I'd agree (http://www.rogeralbertclarkrally.co.uk/). With 4wd there is too much traction.

    Events I've seen:
Circuit races - Sports cars (le mans type) in 6 hour races at Silverstone a few times in the early 80s (Porsche 935 and 936 era).
    Rallies ...
World Championship, Corsica 93, Catalonia 98 and 99, Rally Oz 03, RAC / Rally GB some of it in 82, 84, 85. Every day of it in 86-01(inc), 03, 04.
Countless British rallies from the 82 Mintex International on, including the Manx in 83 and Roger Albert Clark in 05.
Some Oz ones starting with RoC 2003. Mainly ARC including Rally SA in 04 and also an AMSAG event in 04.
    unfrogged (for now)
