Default F1 - Liberty Media wants to change start line grid format

According to Bild (German publication), Liberty Media want a change to the start grid format.

The proposal is three cars on the first grid, two on the second, three on the third and alternating so to the end of the grid.

I think it's a great move, greater chance of more cars arriving at the same time into the first corner, it can only be a good thing for the crash cameras

They could achieve an even better media result with a reverse grid!

Can't see how that would work - no body would go out for Qualifying!

Unless you based the reverse grid on the last race results which means DNF cars would be at the front of the grid.

Maybe it could be based on the magnitude of team budgets!

A lottery might work - pulling names out of a hat!

    Cheers

I agree that if you have just one race, what would the incentive be for qualifying.

I read Fordman's comment as a cheeky one for creating more mayhem, rather than a serious suggestion.

In karting, the reverse grid works on the basis of heats. 1st heat, fastest to front, 2nd heat, fastest to the rear etc, but it can create mayhem, was aware of one incident where two front runners were passing a tail end charlie on the main straight, one on the left, the other on the right. The tail end charlie was startled when the first one passed him and moved in the other direction, making wheel to wheel contact with the other fast kart, launching one airborne ta maximum speed, back in the days before the side-pods.

Reverse grid races were known as "Butchers Picnic" races back in the sixties.......

Quite correct - the thread refers to a "media" company wanting to increase the danger at the first corner to satisfy their own goals of making it even more sensational, so why not go the whole hog???

Funnily enough, there have been a few F1 races recently which have almost been reverse grids due to the penalties applied for various stupid reasons. I see no sense in penalising those already suffering from mechanical defects.
