    Default F1 - Mexico 2017 - spoiler alert

    Fridays FP1

Bottas was fastest. Mercedes achieved the times on ultrasofts. Red Bull and Ferrari ran on the harder supersofts.

    Friday FP2

Ricciardo was the fastest on Fridays FP2. Hamilton had a spin in turn 11 early in the session but managed not to hit anything. Verstappen was unable to to complete the session due to an engine problem. If my memory serves me right, Verstappen took penalties last round for a new engine, karma seems to be after him.

Vettel had to change his driving suit as a small fire extinguisher discharged and wet his pants. More Karma?

Romain Grosjean spun early in the session. His rear tyre failed on the main straight after the spin, damaging the car floor and practice had to be paused to clean the track.

    4/ Vettel
    5/ Raikkonen
    6/ Bottas

Haas driver Kevin Magnussen may miss the Mexico round due to illness. He was unable to attend the drivers meeting on Friday after practice due to illness.

Giovinazzi is likely to drive the Haas in place on Magnussen if he is unfit to compete.

Lewis needs to finish in the top 5 in Mexico to secure his Drivers Championship title for this year.

Ricciardo had difficulties in getting his tyres up to temperature in qualifying, resulting in qualifying in 7th place.

Default Renault engines expiring in Mexico

Three Renault engines expired during the race in Mexico.

Daniel Ricciardo took penalties before the start of the race as number of engine components were changed before the start of the race, despite of this, he was forced to retire from the race due to a turbo problem.

Nico Hulkenberg's Renault had a power unit failure and failed to finish.

Brendan Hartley's Renault powered Toro Rosso had engine failure.

    Hi,
so boiling it all down, only Mercedes and Ferrari can make F1 engines work properly.

Pretty amazing when you think about the number of boffins Honda and Renault have who know about engines.
If it is true about Aston Martin thinking about trying to build the buggers, they better be pretty sure what theyr'e getting into.

    Regards
    John

I suspect part of the motivation for Aston Martin may well be the fact that Red Bull are between the rock and the hard place after next year with their engines unless they find a solution quickly as Renault reputedly want to stop supplying Red Bull after 2018. Their only viable option is Honda or new engine supplier.

McLaren is ditching Honda for Renault engines.

This could get interesting, but not necessarily competitive racing.
