Default F1 - British Grand Prix - Spoiler alert

Bottas was the fastest in both practices on Friday if only by a whisker, but still quickest. Pity he will cop a five grid place penalty for premature gearbox replacement. Hamilton had his 5 grip place penal in the last round.

Hamilton was second fastest in both sessions.

The Red Bulls were 3rd and 4th fastest in the first session and 5th and 6th in the second session, Max being the quicker Red Bull driver in both sessions.

Kimi was faster than Vettel in both sessions. Ferrari's improved from 5th & 6th in the first session to 3rd & 4th in the seconds session. The Ferrari's were some 3/10ths behind the Mercs in the second session. Red Bulls were about a second behind Ferrari's in the second practice session.

The third Saturday am practice session should be over in about 30 minutes or so.

    Qualifying results

    Hamilton..........1:26.600
    Raikkonen........1:27.147
    Vettel..............1:27.356
    Bottas..............1:27.376
    Verstappen.......1:28.130
    Helkenberg.......1:28.856

Looks like another runaway race for Hamilton looking at his speed advantage and starting from the front, unless Vettel manged to dive bomb him and take him out in the first corner

Ricciardo 20th only managed 4 laps. Gearbox failure, new gearbox resulted in 5 start grid place penalty for the race, which seems academic.

Bottas also will take 5 grid place penalty for new gearbox.

The stewards were looking at Hamilton for blocking Grojean's timed run. Any news on that front for the perfect Pom? He'll get off of course, being a perfect Pom at a race in the UK..............

With those guys, there is a lot of 'cash and carry', and brown paper bags. So you know what they will agree to.

Another Mercedes benefit after an exciting last few laps. Hamilton, Bottas, and Raikkonen filled the first three places. Danny Ricciardo finished sixth after starting 20th.

I think Ric finished 5th? Vettle 7th after the late puncture. 1 point separating them.

Sorry, my bad.....With everything that happened in the last few minutes I couldn't keep up! The Renault of Hulkenberg ended up sixth. And to clarify things even further, Ricciardo started from 19th....

Vettel and Verstappen had a good battle in the beginning of the race with Vettel triying to escort Verstappen wide on the outside of the corner, only to have the youngster show him how it's done right short time later. Vettel did a tyre change on lap 19 and managed to get ahead of Verstappen with the undercut.

I think Vettel and Verstappen deserve each other. Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull until the end of 2018, rumours have him going to Ferrari in 2019. Vettel's contract is coming to an end end of this year. Ferrari want to sign him for a multiyear contract, Vettel is rumoured to want only a 12 month contract. They would make such an interesting team mates.

Kimi ran a clean race in 2nd place until two laps from end his front left tyre destroyed itself. Anther strategy stuff up by the team. Vettel's tyre let go one lap later. Kimi recovered to finish a dejected 3rd.

Ricciardo did well with his drive from the rear of the field to finish fifth.

Bottas started from 9th due to gearbox change penalty and finished 2nd, another good drive. He has a contract with Mercedes only for this year. Merc are not rushing signing him on, obviously keeping their options open with people like Vettel coming off contract. Where will he end up, perhaps at Ferrari if Merc leave him dangling too long.

The drivers championship point table is interesting with Vettel only one point ahead of Hamilton, but Bottas is only 23 point behind Vettel, so all three drives still have a realistic chance at the title with roughly half the season gone.

Daniel is in fourth place, but 60 points behind the leader, but more importantly he is 60 points ahead of his team mate Max Verstappen.

Can't help but feel sorry for Alonso.

Such a talented driver but doesn't have the equipment to show it.

Imagine the mix if he had a reliable fast car and was running with the Mercedes, Ferrari's and Red Bulls at the front.

    Cheers

I agree from the viewer perspective, but he is being extremely well rewarded for his "discomfort" and he must have know the risk when he signed on the dotted line.

I hear he is looking to ditch McLaren for competitive car and McLaren will ditch Honda next year. Ferrari are not interested in him, Red Bull have two very good up and coming drivers locked up on contracts. That leaves Mercedes, well we all remember last time Alonso and Hamilton were in the same team. Perhaps McLaren with a Merc engine (provided they can get it and might me easier now that Ron Dennis has left the team) will be the best option for him, or perhaps Renault, but neither will be surefire front runner next year yet.
