Default F1 - Winter testing in Bacelona this week

Winter testing started today. Testing will consist of four days this week and four days next week. Most teams are sharing the driving duties so that one of the driver drives one day and the other driver the next day, but Mercedes are splitting the days driving with one driver in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

    Default Lance stroll in Barcelona

The spin looks harmless enough, but apparently fair bit of damage cause (I assume under the car) putting the car out until repairs were done. Apparently part had to be sent back to factory for repair.

From my days of karting, the thing I learnt real quick was it you drop the rear wheel off the blacktop, you had better come off the power real quick or have a spin.

that green strip next to the race surface looks nice and slippery! should be awesome with a bit of rain on it..

i must say that, knowing that the cars are faster and corner faster, i now cant help thinking i can see that in the video. am i just imagining that? or are they visibly faster round corners? assuming that is representative, the engines sound throatier in a suitable and masculine way, i feel.

OTOH, it might all just be in my imagination....

Winter test last year and this year were/are at Barcelona

Last year, the fastest time after day four was 1:22.810 (Ferrari).

This year after day three (yesterday) fastest time was under 1:20.00, so considerably faster with more rubber, more aero and natural evolution of the cars. Today will be fourth day plus an other four days next week, so I will be surprised if they don't find more time before the tests are over.

The trouble with test times is one does not know how the teams are running their cars, the engine tune, fuel loads etc, so the degree of sandbagging is anyone's guess. After day four last year Mercs were 8th and 12th fastest and yet they blitzed everybody during the year.

It looks like Lance Stroll is struggling with the Williams. He apparently ran out of road three times on the first two days, followed by the out caught o video on day three (see post #3). The last out caused sufficient damage to put the Williams out for the rest of the first week.

and bought into the drive by - what was it? - $100m+ by his rich dad.
i am thinking most of the drivers would be giving him a bit of a cold shoulder.

The winter testing ended Friday. Ferrari and Merecedes were at the head of the pack in speed and reliability.

The fastest time this year was set by Raikkonen at 1:18,634, which was 4.1 seconds faster than the fastest time last year. I think that gives a clear indication that the new cars are much faster, what we don't know is how much the teams were holding back.

Red Bull are expecting a chassis and engine upgrades before Melbourne.

It appears that Mercedes had a reliability related problem with the crankshaft in Barcelona so they were not able to run at full power. It was apparently a serious problem, but Mercedes are confident the issue can be fixed before the first round. It is highly likely that Mercedes are still the team to beat, even though Ferrari recorded fastest time during the Barcelona tests.

    Melbourne should be interesting.

with their resources and experience, i am just going to assume that whatever problem they are having with crankshafts, the wheels of industry will have it sorted before you can say "lewis is having a tanty".

Its either a true statement or another bluff/sandbagging comment.

Either way I can wait to see how they race.

Yep, I will be there all 4 days, as an official in the support paddock. Get to hang out with the carrera cup cars and the GT championship if they are both on again this year.
