Default WRC _ 30 years since the death of Henri Toivonen

It is 30 years today since the accident which claimed the life of Henri Toivonen and his co-driver Sergio Cresto. This accident along with others before it, marked the end of the mighty Group B era.

was it instrumental in bringing about that end, or was it just a bad farewell card?

It was the final nail in the coffin

The previous year there had been another fatal accident and earlier that year a car ploughed into the spectators killing 3 and injuring large number

The cars they were developing fornthe following season were out of control also. I read somewhere (or maybe not) that the Audi was pushing 800hp and the 205 was being pushed to explosion! 10000rpm and too much lag!

That seems entirely plausible - the F1 engines of the time were putting out something like 1500bhp in qualifying trim.

My understanding is that the Audi Quatro at the time was putting out 600-650 hp. Some sources put the Lancia at 500 HP others at 560HP, but I have read that they got 1000 hp in testing the engine with the boost turned up to 5 bars boost. With weight of under 900 kg it was brutally fast and reputedly "vicious awkward" car to drive.
