    Default F1 Hamilton penalty

Mercedes have confirmed that they will replace Hamilton's gearbox before this weekends race in China. Rules state that driver must use the same gearbox for 6 consecutive races. The gearbox was damaged in Bahrain. The penalty will be 5 grid positions.

Well that wil increase Nico's lead to at least 24 points I would expect. Anything that changes the status quo is probably desirable.
Two Ferraris on the podium? The gap to Lewis would then be 30 points. A little more than a race win when Nico has a dnf.

Is there no distinction in that rule between a failed part and an abused part?

    Not to my knowledge.

I think you will find that Alonso will have a new powerplant after the crash and that will count towards the allowed number of engines for the season, once that number is exceeded, penalties apply. Not sure if his transmission survived the crash or not. Stupid IMHO, but they are the rules,

Unless something unexpected happens on Turn 1 and Lewis finds himself running second all of a sudden! Nah, never would....

With the tyre failures they have had in practice (3 failures so far with one session to run), so who knows
