Default Eden Valley Hillclimb 13th December

Every time I drove down the Keyneton to Sedan road when setting up the State Bank Rerun I thought what a great place for a hillclimb.
Well it is happening, 3.5 km of closed road on the 13th of December, no need for special preparation such as road cages, you will need a CAMS 2s licence, easy to get.
37 entries so far, I have entered my 309 GTi, Aussiefrogger Brett has entered his 306 GTI6, also a 405 Mi16 has entered.
100 entry limit, so still enough places at the moment if you want to join us.

I'm not happy with the 306, so will probably bring my 206GTI180 IPRA car.
My Father In-Law is in the other 206GTI180.

That's wonderful!! I drove that road for months in the R8 back in the 1980s when investigating the lignite deposit near Sedan. (I'll bet no-one remembers the prospect of a coal mine near Sedan!)

Thinking of the two forms of Hillclimb, (1) "the track", Collingrove being a great example, and (2) "the road", this one being potentially great, I reckon you, or whoever has pulled it off, has done well.

Looks very open, particularly the first part, but in car always seems to have that effect.
You are just going up on Sunday morning I guess?
I will probably stay overnight at Mannum.

We will be saying at my parents the night before and then head up
I need to check access times from the Angaston side.
My guess is a chicane may appear near the start.

    Highlights reel.

I took it relatively gently given the carnage the 4wd cars had on the first run.

I had an enjoyable drive over in the 309, arrived in time for dinner at the Mannum Motel, then up early Sunday morning to drive the 40km to Sedan and the event.
I got 7.3 l/100km in the 309 GTi so the leaded D6B was running well at 27 years of age.
It was good to meet up with Brett, Sandy and Daryl with their family team of 206s. I also had a talk to Peter Male who had a worked over Mi16. The rest of the field was comprised of very potent machinery, to me there only seemed like one or two cars that I should be able to beat and this proved to be the case!
Unfortunately I was a little slower than I should have been (although still beat the aforementioned cars, Fords and Hondas, not the Peugeots) as when I took off on the first run I had clutch slip on what was probably the original clutch the car came with! OK when on the move but a couple of seconds lost on every standing start.
The course was challenging especially at the start with a fast sweeper over a culvert followed by an S bend with 50km/h advisory signs!

I got the sweeper right on the final run, flat in 4th was MUCH better than backing of in 3rd, the 50km/h bends also needed flat in 4th but I ran out of time to get that right.
The rest of the course was twisty 3rd gear up the hill, just needed to keep working away on being tidy.
Unfortunately on the last run the engine started to miss on the climb so no benefit from getting the sweeper right.

Just goes to show that competition brings out faults you never knew were there.
However, the bits that I had fixed since getting the car were great, suspension, steering, diff etc, the car just drove round like on rails. Tyres were great, 195 50 15 RE002s I was only one of two cars using road tyres but really it would have made no difference. Overall a lesson in turning up in an untried standard road car I guess.

I would come back but preferably in the other 309 when it gets the 16 valve conversion and rally prep, but I've got say that it would still be a long way down the field, many of the other cars would have had well over 500 horsepower, EVOs WRXS and GTRs.
My favourite car though was the FIAT X1/9 maybe a Honda engine and sequential box, although not the fastest it looked and sounded fantastic.
Winner was Steve Glenney in an EVO.

The event was successful but given the experience of the organisers it could have run better, only 4 runs due to slow response to the crashes earlier on and results still not finalised. My results still show DNS on the second two runs after I had sorted this out with the organisers on Tuesday.
Apparently officials were sometimes looking at numbers from other events, not the ones on the official door stickers.

Wow that Fiat X1/9 looks very fast on YouTube. Perhaps the open window and camera mounted in the back gave more impression of speed. And LHD by the look of it?
