    Default Alonso crash in Barcelona

Alonso crashed his McLaren Honda in Barcelona on Sunday. It has been reported as a strangle crash as he was travelling at about 150 kph when the car suddenly turned into the wall. Alonso was airlifted to hospital. He was conscious and spoke to the medical staff at the track. He spent the night in hospital for observation

I saw some photos and it looks like he backed it in. Might have dropped a wheel on the grass or had a left rear suspension or tyre failure...

According to the description of how the accident happened in the Scandinavian media, sounded to me like a failure of some sort. I haven't found any video footage of the accident itself. There are few where an official is getting interviewed after the event.

    Edit.
"Sebastian Vettel, the four times world champion who replaced Alonso at Ferrari, was behind Alonso at the time of the accident and said: “The speed was slow – maybe 150kph. Then he turned right into the wall. It looked strange.” On Sunday evening McLaren were still investigating the cause of the accident."

Latest speculation is that Alonso may have lost consciousness before the accident

You would think that an official statement would put an end to the matter.
Another night in hospital for Fred. No firm statement about when he leaves.

Alonso spent second night in hospital. Speculation is that he may miss the rest of the next Barcelona testing starting on Thursday.

McLaren claim that the data shows that Alonso was down shifting and braking immediately before the accident, which seems to counter the speculation that the accident was caused by Alonso passing out.

oh come now! you know that, to much of the world, an official statement just proves they are covering something up.

Maybe the Williams was fitted with something like this to protect Alonso whilst he was asleep!

Alonso has been discharged after spending three nights in hospital. He is currently with family in Spain and not taking part in the testing that started this morning. Italian press are claiming he has ongoing head aches and pain in the shoulders and back.

Dennis made a statement saying he believed Alonso had passed out after the accident, not before the accident.

That could have been recorded before the accident, it would be more believable if he were holding up a current newspaper..

Or better still if he was standing in front of the wreck.

More rumours regarding the circumstances of the crash - the latest round of rumours claim that Alonso did not know who he was immediately after the crash. He also thought he was driving a Ferrari. He spent 3 nights in hospital before going home to rest, which I think suggests Doctors must have had some concerns about his welfare.

Alonso's participation in Melbourne has not been confirmed as yet.

Apparently, whilst he has recovered from the accident, the main risk is, if he were to suffer a second concussion in Melbourne, so Doctors have recommended that he not take part in the first round. He must have copped a fair jolt, keeping in mind the car hit the wall broadside so one would assume the Hans device may not have been as effective as in a more direct heads on type accident

A specialist in the area was interviewed by Finnish media and his comment was that concussion can effect the sharpest reflexes required in F1, thus further increasing accident risk.

when you look at the points over recent years, the championship tally could so easily have been Alonso 4 Vettel 2, rather than the other way around. to then start a new season by missing the first round must be just so galling for him.

I think he is going to regret the timing of his move from Ferrari to McLaren. Ferrari seem to have taken a major step forward whilst McLaren -Honda have seemingly done the reverse with reliability issues and not that quick it would seem at this stage.

Must have been a serious bump. This from today's Canberra Times..................

Fernando Alonso 'forgot 20 years of his life' and thought it was 1995 after crash in testing

    Some whack, yes.

Some reports are claiming it took a week for Alonso to get most of his memory back, which is most concerning.

Further gossip - latest claim is that Alonso was unconscious for eight minutes after the crash

    ---------------------

Vettel claimed at the time that Alonso was driving slowly, around 150 kmph. It is a corner that is normally taken at around 230 kmph, which in itself is strange of possibly suggesting some type of issue.
