    Default Renault: Butt of jokes?

It seems that the 'net has tighter censorship than the newspapers.
Check out the Renault ad here:

    http://www.thesundaymail.news.com.au...5E5422,00.html

and if you're in Queensland goto "The Sunday Mail" on page 38 and see what's missing.
The text will tell you the answer.............bloody stranger than the ad in my book.

Looks great. Very individual. Doubt I'd take one over the new Golf but it will be great to see them on the roads.

The gamble has paid of in Europe, thats for sure. Its the best selling car over there. (Although I think the Ford Focus is the best selling in the UK still?)

I quite like the look of the new megane. Especially the RenaultSport version which is due to come out.

But the one that takes the cake for me - and would do for most who don't like the shape of the 'ass'... is the new Megane CC that's also due to arrive mid '04. It's got a folding glass roof, which converts it from Coupe to Convertible...and of course being a coupe, the roof is slanted at the rear...with no 'stick up rear'.

I don't mind the Megane II's styling, I think it's a far more successful effort than the Vel Satis. One interesting pic in Drive in The Age last Thursday had a photo of the five door, but the car's bum was cropped in the image - looked really smart.

Dealers should have had their test drive cars delivered by now. All the cars sitting in dealerships previously have been Kiwi cars, which will be sent back across the Tasman. Starting this week, you should be able to test drive the cars.

It was interesting to discover how Peugeot are viewing the Megane II - after all, 307 vs Megane is basically Falcon vs Commodore back in the cars' home country. Peugeot isn't too worried about the Megane locally (it's nothing to do with the car's value or its level of engineering). They're more concerned about the Golf V, and the current Golf IV is moving in huge numbers with the current promotions that VW is doing. Little wonder there's a free $2000 worth of accessories now being offered on the 307 hatch. 3596 sold this year so far, or 53% of Peugeot sales.

Saw one drive by as I was leaving my home, with a number plate starting with SOS - makes sense if you've seen Renault's sales results recently (the dealers really have some creative excuses) I know Renault's new boss lives nearby

I think they could meet their sales target of 150 units per month. At least Renault now has a proper bread and butter car in their range. You only need to see what the 307 has done for Peugeot downunder.

The rear end of the Megane II looks much better in the flesh than in print. (Still not quite my thing, but by no means bad.) I noticed someone down the road just got a metallic light green one.

PS. does this make me the first to have sticker-slapped a new Megane?

I say that "big Booty" ad last night. What a great add, didnt know the sight of big butts would make people buy cars .

However the megane is very cool looking car, i'd go as far to say that it's one of the best looking renaults of recent time, peugeot must have had some influnece .

anyone looking at getting one, what's the retail on one of those?

Pricing is similar to the 307. Here is the pricing for the 5 door Megane IIs.

Authentique manual $25,990 (same as 307 XS)
Authentique auto $28,190 (same as 307 XS)
Dynamique manual $31,990 ($200 more than 307 XSE)
Dynamique auto $34,190 ($200 more than 307 XSE)
Dynamique LX manual $34,990 ($325 more than 307 XSE with leather)
Dynamique LX auto $37,190 ($325 more than 307 XSE with leather)

    * - N.B, 307 XSE does not have 17" alloys, only 16"

3dr Dynamique LX Sport hatches are $1000 less than the 5 door Dynamique LX.

Generally equipment & pricing are fairly similar to the 307.

Do we have estimated Sports prices ??? The 307 range is nothing to write home about when it comes to performance .. even the 307CC isn't quick, they may handle nice, but wonder what the Megane will be like ? Anyone test driven one yet ?

The 2.0 (98.5kW - these decimal points bring back memories of the R19) Megane Dynamique LX Sport (basically Renault's 307 XSi) starts at $33,990. Nothing much has been said about the more cooking versions.

In respect to handling, based on European reports I've read, it's not a Focus league car. A few of the UK reviews I've read criticised the steering in particular. First Aussie review is on Carpoint, which is pretty good (2.0).

I'd imagine the car is well hushed, just based on the quality of the materials inside (there are certain things you can extrapolate from the quality of materials used).

I'll be driving a Megane this week, the dealer says the car should be available.
