    Default Favourite Convertible

    Dream time again.
Lets say you have $100k to spend on a convertible for cruising on hot summer nights. Has to be automatic, refined, comfortable, powerful etc. Can be new or used. Which would you pick?
My choice - previous model SL500.
(there'd still be a GTi6 in the garage for thrills)

A Porsche Boxster comes in just over A$108.500,00 incl GST, not even going to put the Boxster-S or Boxster-S-Special-Ed prices. For that money a MX5-SP would do me and I'll keep the change.

Does it have to be auto

If it has to be that way, I suppose a Jaguar XJS late model convertible, or maybe a real early XJ8 if they are that cheap. I don't think so yet though.
Maybe for a new one, (don't hit me) a Volvo C70.
Or for the ultimate, how about a used Dodge Viper RT/10 in bright red

Of course, for that money I could probably get a replica Peugeot 402 Darlmat roadster or replica Jaguar SS100 built and have a real gearbox !

P.S. who wants a convertible when you could have a 205 T16 for the same money

....a 280 se convertible.....'72....the one with the "americana" headlights (vertical dual rounds).....rides better than anything the americans have ever made (or will make) and just looks sensational from whichever angle u look at it....
i d have a light beige one with beige interior (yes including the carpets)...nice walnut dash.....6.3 litres of glory and air suspension....hard to beat.....there is also plenty of chrome and the steering is finger light.....

in my opinion...has to be one of the best cruisers EVER made....

    cheers

    dino
....ps....could have one (almost imaculate) for around $70 000....ceartinly cheaper than the mint ds convertibles....

For refinement I couldn't go past a Merc. Perhaps an SL500 for a more modern feel. But the ultimate cruisers are the old Mercs, and yes, they are bloody good. I had a 71 280. It was so comfotable and had stupid amounts of power on tap. It's a shame that we don''t have an Autobahn over here to use these vehicles for what they were designed.

Mmmmm....have to be a new Saab 9-3, BMW has too much 'wank' value! Otherwise a DS Decapotable' would be nice or a Lotus Elise, no auto, but who cares! Aaaaah to dream!

Ok, I have two in mind.

    1) It might not be automatic and not sure it would fit the 100k budget but a Lotus 340R please I've been a passenger in one and they are just an awesome gokart for the road.

    2) Cruise machine - 1969 Mustang convertible
Renault Clio F1R27 road car and Supercharged Lotus Elise track car

honda s2000, with the remaining money spent on a low boost turbo to spool up in the low rev range.

    Default convertibles

Those may all be fun but try a v8 Morgan before you say too much.

They area real hoot. The main limit to cornering is staying in the seat!!!!

If I had to have an automatic convertible, it would be a Rolls-Royce Corniche (assuming a Bentley Azure is waaaaaay beyond dreamland), Aston-Martin DB7 Volante or Aston-Martin Virage (though I read that their structural rigidity is quite poor). As far as I'm concerned, nothing beats cruising 4-up, top-down in a Roller or Aston.
Other than that, the R129 (previous shape) M-Benz SL500/600 and the E36 BMW 328iA Convertible would top my list.

A 911 or Boxster would be fun to drive, but I feel it's a pity to attach those flat sixes to an auto.
