    Default spark plugs

just reading on the bbc about a romanian and japanese team that have made spark plugs
from ceramic powders that are pressed into spark plug sized cylinders
these ceramic devices are lasers in their own right, gathering energy from compact
lower-powered lasers that are sent via optical fibre and releasing it in pulse
just 800 trillionths of a second
they are in talks with denso about marketing

When everyone is driving diesels, why would you need spark plugs?
Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone............

Because your glow plugs would really 'glow'. Plus it would ignite the diesel combustion process at the right time.
The use of, for want of a better term, piezo laser would really help a modern diesel engine to make small gains in performance. This is if you use a base line fuel, but if the fuel quality varies you can get better gains as the 'tech savvy' can pre heat the chamber for complete pre/post combustion. We already have enough sensor technology in the modern engine to convert a diesel compression ignition into a 'very high compression Otto cycle' engine using a piezo laser just adds a more certain outcome.
p.s. Kim and Ken the whale's will love it!
