We are now hosted in Australia on DCS Internet. Everything went well & I think we were without posting for about 13 hours.

We had to leave Powweb in a hurry, they gave us 3 days to stop hugging resources on the server or be suspended.
3 Days meant a weekend involved so we only had today to do the move.
We received 2 violation emails @ about 7PM last night, one for database overuse & the other was for generally too extreme traffic.

The other problem brewing for the last few weeks was the throttling of bandwidth & server side stuff. I hadn't been unable to obtain a backup for 2 & a half weeks.
We know how important backups are don't we!
I was freaking out. To have them do it was going to cost $75 each time. At minimum I would like one every 2 days so you can imagine what it would cost to do that.

Big thanks to Christopher at DCS Internet as he made the whole thing run very smoothly.
I really think we might be staying put for a while now. Hoping we don't overrun their server too much

Are there any protocols we should be wary of - eg uploaded file size of photos?

In what way do you mean?
    Are the attachments working OK?
It should be all the same as before.

    GigGib,

Optus DNS reverted back to the old site around 21:30 last night.

Don't know what is going on ?

Had to change the DNSs again.

I'm with iiNet and haven't had to touch anything, all working fine. Great work to all involved.

My question may have well been born of technical ignorance - my thought was that if hosts are denying service due to hogging of bandwidth then should we take steps to reduce that use through, say, reducing the file size of photos etc that are uploaded?

Again I stress I'm no expert on these matters. It may well be that my thoughts were misguided, too simplistic or even redundant given the new server.

Everything seems to be working well - if not better.

    Cheers

There's still 12 people on the old one as I write this. Some ISP's are slow at updating.

I think I need to look at images & directory permissions to fix a few little things. Got your email Gamma, thanks will look into it.

I posted on the old site about half an hour ago and then got taken here again. Just for feedback I'm letting you know I keep being sent from the old version to the new one about every hour. My ISP is Optus cable, it seems to be updated one hour and not the next.

Anyway, I hope this might help for the fine-tuning and fixing.

I've got the same behavior. It can only be the weird way Optus do their DNS refreshes.

Possibly they switch to the backup DNS whilst updating or something.

What's got me confused that it's OK for while then reverts to the power web site. So when they switch they go to earlier version of DNS records.

    It should come good soon.

I cracked it and set the DNS servers as per what gibgib suggested.

Hi Kaye, I just responded to you on the old server.

    Kaye,
You shouldn't need to change your router just your PC's adaptor DNS.
So you'd make it "Manual" DNS & just add the generic settings that most ISP's seem to use or dive to you. They can stay like this forever:
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4

    Done!

Your ISP would be caching AF periodically so it may spit out the wrong one sometimes.

Attachments seem OK now. Couldn't find anything wrong, all I did was hit save again on the settings. I did choose a border around the edges but that is cosmetic only.

The Members Gallery needed it's folder attributes changed. It is OK again apart from the style problem on it's main page. Not sure why it's doing that.

Thanks gigbgib, I am back again in the intermittent way it has been and have not changed anything as yet. I don't actually know how to do that ^ as I am not very computer literate. I need 'for dummies' instructions, sorry.
Maybe I will give it a day or two and see if it self rectifies.

Quite a few members seemed to be locked out still, I know Russell is, maybe the more remote country folks will take longer to find us depending on their ISP?

I think some of the Tassie folks are also not here yet.

    gibgib,

Optus customers using their DNS are still having intermittent issues getting to new site.

I'm using custom DNS and having no problems.

I have a feeling there is more to this issue about simple name server update delays.

It's been 48 hours and the changes should be everywhere by now, I believe the RFCs suggest 12 hours max to update.

I've sent detailed instructions to K.

    cheers & good night

    Rob

Yeah Rob sent me what I was asking for ie 'for dummies' instructions.

Thanks Rob, if I end up there again I'll post your instructions on to the old forum, (no use posting them here!)
One cannot just go back to the old forum either,
    thanks again all,

Fair comment, but they must have some weird update order on their cluster.

Night before last at 19:00 all was OK went to the DSCI site. Then at about 20:00 the DNS changed back to the Powerweb site.

Yesterday in the morning we were on the new, then in afternoon back at the old.

I can understand being slow to update but can't work out why we should alternate between outdated and current DNS entries?

Yep, Russell, you are definitely on the new site now. Just beware of your ISP changing DNS, especially Optus it would seem, and sending you back to the old site.

If you get back there, you will see I have posted the instructions on how to set up DNS servers on XP manually for machines using an Ethernet connected modem.

I've had no trouble at all. But then my ISP is DCSI and the servers are just across the road.

I hadn't thought of using a floppy! That could save me quite a bit of time when I want to read them at home. At the moment I get Mark to print them off for me, then I take them to the post office. Some times it takes days.

But when I use that electric interweb thingy in the office; yes I do get some threads before they are posted.

I think I was there too, but maybe I only imagined it.

But anyway, is there something still slightly amiss somewhere? I printed a page of a thread and got strange, unrelated stuff down the left side of the page. And, just now, I've clicked on a photo at the bottom of the page, and the same stuff appears.

    Hi, Mike,

Is this what you are getting?
    http://www.aussiefrogs.com/forum/vbpicgallery.php

There's a problem with the style that I can't seem to fix. I'll have to ask the expert.
