Default French car market Jan Feb 2011

This really highlights the difference between France and Australia in terms of attitudes towards cars. The downsizing trend continues and the market share of makers like Mercedes, BMW, Landrover and Lexus continue to drop. Makes like Audi are doing well because of their positioning with small luxury cars like the A1. The French are holding more of their home market, about 56%, and that is mainly due to improvements in Renault sales.
Note that diesels are 70% of the market.
Not shown in this is that the battle has hotted up between the Mini, DS3, A1 and now the Fiat 500 Abarth, one of the liveliest market sectors.
The commitment of CitroŽn to upmarket versions of smaller cars like the DS3 and 4 is turning out a wise market decision.

The industries marketing budget largely came from Ford and GM for fifty years or more.

Their lobbying power ensured that governements protected their position and made it unattractive for other overseas manufacturers to expose Australia to the wealth of automobile innovation, that was not relevant to US profit model.
Australia missed out on trends that offered better primary safety, comfort and economy and is now catching up as the Americans are forced to offer these features in their home market.
