The European Union is funding a reseach program on a supercapacitor technology patented by Volvo. It uses carbon fibre composite as a capacitor which promises very high storage to weight ratios. In addition it can safely be used as structural components in a car. The idea is to build sections like the roof and boot floor in the material and then connect it to an electric car's battery. Because of its fast charge and discharge characteristics it can handle the short term acceleration and braking loads extending the battery life and offer a fast short charge to get you home.
