Moving the race to South America was a bold move which has revitalized the format . The attitude from the competitors is that the Paris-Dakar is a part of motor sport history and now they have a chance to make their own . I remember watching it the first time , the huge crowds , the smiles on the faces of the competitors, crews and organizers , the scenery , the gut busting torture of the Atacama Desert , I sat there thinking this has really pulled everyone together . Although the transport costs are higher this has been offset by more sponsors coming on board .

I won't be able to see the race this time , I,m in the middle of renovations so I don't have a livingroom or anywhere to plug a TV in , I,ll just have to see the highlights on the PC

    Default Paris to Dubbo??

It is my belief they changed continents for the race because of unrest in Africa and couldn't guarantee safety of the competitors or fans.

Maybe some enterprising type from Oz could entice them to do one here at some stage in the future,,,,,we've got camels and desert too.

Yes, they had to abandon Africa because of the constant and ongoing threat of violence/ terrorism etc , the Insurers pulled the plug and that was it

Yes , Australia was considered but the big issue was transport costs and the fact that the major population centers are to far away from where they wanted to race, broadcast rights were also an issue, the motorsport romantic in all of us would love to see the full field be destroyed mentally and physically as they fight their way across the Sturt Stony Desert but it's highly unlikely we will see it happen

, it just made too much sense to relocate to South America

The fight really begins this year, but it's not VW against BMW, although Robbie Gordon last year was the sole pretender.
The fight is between the energy drinks of Red Bull from Austria and Monster now with the might of Coca Cola behind them: and America does not like losing, especially against the Europeans.
In every type of motor sport Monster is pouring millions into the advertising, as Red Bull have had the upper hand for years.
