Victoria....Melbourne...corner of auburn and riversdale road...

I almost got sideswiped in a similar intersection very early in the morning by a guy who ran the red...
I ve not seen this light personally but maybe its there to warn others or police that somebody has ran a red...its an intersection where the buildings "block" vision...so might also be something that "emergency" vehicles can activate to protect themselves...as sirens and lights just arent enough in such a "closed" environments...

Im curious to hear "official" explanation...

Dino got the location in one!
These things are all over the place or so it seems. Always suspected some big brother thing in the making? They don't seem to be speed monitoring cameras becaus i've gone through these intersections above the speed limit (unintentionally of course). Thought someone might know what it actually is for without putting two and two together and getting five.

Does it have the letter 'T' on it? If it does and it is on a tram line the intersection may have a cycle to allow trams to move through the intersection independently of the normal cycle!

What's the shape/letter when it lights up?

Reminds me of busway lights here in NSW, like rmac said, maybe it's for trams.

Never saw it light up and there appears to be no letter. I.m aware of separate tram and turning lights. it's none of those.

If it's not for trams or buses, the only thing remaining I can think of is bicycles.

    Hey, UFO,

I have noticed a difference in the tenor of your posts of late -

Are you on something, and if so, is it generally available?

    Onya, UFO -

Now if you have any tickets left how about a return trip with the Taddiespa and contents - that should really lift the spirits of many froggers.

Would you believe this is the latest news on Vic Roads website:

    http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/...tingLogies.htm

VicRoads showed its support on Friday night at Victoria's Lighting Design Awards at Federation Square. These awards recognise excellence in lighting design within a built environment. Children’s author Tony Wilson spoke about his book The Minister for Traffic Lights, which describes a minister’s plan to add a mauve traffic light to the set.

“When the mauve light turns on, everyone has to get out of their cars and hug each other in order to prevent road rage,” said Chief Executive of VicRoads Gary Liddle.

In preparation for the event VicRoads donated an old set of traffic lights. “This is in appreciation of a book which offers a light-hearted way to improve driver attitudes on the road,” said Mr Liddle.

“VicRoads worked together with Electrolight, who re-wired the traffic signals to include a mauve light.”

So who feels like a hug?

Disclaimer: Obviously this is NOT the answer to the original post, but it does show I had a good look !
