    Private Messages

One problem I've found with private messages is that people don't read them - based on what the forum software is telling me.

Is there anyway to put a message on the site when you first arrive to tell you if you have a private message? I've seen this on other boards.

Some people may have the option to send an email when a PMsg is received turned off - and if they don't know about the feature, or don't check, it's a bit hard trying to communicate.

Or alternativly we could have a login-only page of peoples email addresses, circumventing the need to use private messaging, but still ensuring that no unauthorised use of email occurs.

I receive quite a few Private messages and there is a notification that goes directly to my e-mail address that not only advises me that I have a private message but also tells me what it contains.
Don't your e-mail services do that??

    Good point Justin,

To receive email notification of Private Messages you need to set this as a preference in "My Profile" at the top of the forum page. If you do not have this set as a preference the only way of knowing you have received a PM is to go to "My Profile" when you log on.

Silly thing of course, is that you can read the message in email form without going to the forum, if you then don't pick up your PM on the forum it will appear as un-read.

So, yes gibgib, is there some way that the board can advise members when they log on that they have a Private Message??

    Cheers

Both ten-tenths and AtlasF1 have pop-ups that invite you to open your messages in a new window when you log in or refresh the forum page.

In my own case, I won't be getting any e.mails regarding private messages sent last Friday week for another fortnight... I'm away from my computer for that long at a stretch.

    It would sure help me.

    G'day.
I would also like to know if I have a PM waiting, especially when I'm away from my home email client.

We are a few versions behind in the bulletin board software, but to tell you the truth, I'm not too keen on some of the new features the latest ones have.
One thing for sure is that everyone would have to re-choose their avatar.

    Happy to update it however.

We have been on the current version for nearly a year, seems a waste to upgrade for just to benefit one feature.

    Here's the latest features:

I've got the email alert turned on - but sometimes you send PMs to people, and you get no reply, or you don't know whether they've read it.

I believe it is the YaBB software - on the forum pages, at the bottom of the forum menu it tells you how many messages you have.

The forum is fine - I like the instant UBB code buttons, a great feature. This issue with PM is just something to keep in mind for the future.

Has anyone had a look at the Ford XR6 site?

    <a href="http://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/" target="_blank">http://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/</a>

Not that I have a Ford or even want one but a mate at work showed it to me as he has just bought a XR6 Turbo. It's a pretty slick looking site, sorta has a Windows XP look about it.
    The software is supplied by:

    <a href="http://www.invisionboard.com/" target="_blank">http://www.invisionboard.com/</a>

The pricing seems a bit cheaper than UBB also.

    Cheers,

    Ralph.
