There is a new virus doing the rounds. I received it this morning an as an e-mail with an attached virus. It is real. Beware!

    The message reads as follows:

    "From: "XXXXXX"
    Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2001 12:18:03 -0400
    Subject: Loan Summary

    Hi! How are you?

I send you this file in order to have your advice

    See you later. Thanks"

There was an attachment to this called "Loan"

I have blanked out the name of the person that sent it to me, as he is probably some poor innocent.

The virus hasn't done my Mac any harm. I picked it up because I forwarded it to my work e-mail and the gateway stopped it.

Hopefully nobody else has been affected.

I just received it too (5 minutes ago). Thanks for letting me know it is a virus. Luckily I opened it on a Uni computer and not mine (I was suspicious and I wouldn't have opened it otherwise). Mine had a message in Portugese attached to it which when translated by Altavista babelfish read as follows:

Never in the other margin... Because ratio you always look at for the other? Because he is that you think that the others, friends, known and neighboring, have more luck that you and soon affirm: A life of the others runs a thousand wonders, while I give the best one of me and I do not arrive nothing. Reason? You know? To another margin it is always better! It is far..... As a prisoner of the blackout you yearn for sofregamente for reaching the beautiful clarity. E never you repaired that also of the other margin they observe you and they think as your happiness will be great...! Everything this because they only see your side good. Your small e great concerns are not with them... To live happy is a great art. Therefore it is so important to be satisfied. The happiness is not in the other margin. It is in you. Priest Phil Bosmans

Anyway I've posted the details below email below.

    Hi guys,

I'm getting emails from all over the joint as well.
    It is the W32.sircam.worm file.
If you get it via an email, don't execute as it will take a file off your hard drive & send it to someone in your address book.

Here is an email form Optus I received today:

    <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">
    Dear Customer

A sharp increase in the amount of mail being handled by the subscriber
network has been the cause of intermittent slow periods, which you may have
    experienced on your mail service.

Our investigations have shown that this is due to a large number of
Optus@Home subscribers being infected with the "Sircam" virus.

This virus randomly selects a file off your computer, renames it and
attaches it to an email and then sends it to everyone in your email address
book. The extra email traffic being generated by this virus has possibly
degraded the quality of your mail service.

We are currently taking measures to alleviate the effects of this extra
traffic on the mail service. However, for the health of your own computer
we recommend the use of Anti-Virus software that is specifically designed
for preventing "infection" by potentially destructive viruses.

For information on the "Sircam Virus" please click this link.

For more information on anti-virus software please click this link.

For further assistance please contact Optus@Home Customer Support on
    1300 300 693.
