    Fast Fours and Rotaries Jamboree

    Hi all,

Did anyone go and see this years Jambo?

Im not really into the drags, but...it was a fantastic day, some fabulous machinery was on display and running quarter mile drags. No french cars (as usual) apart from my 205 and a 505 GTi were the only frogs in the carpark come to think of it, very few euro cars at all....apart from a Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL (from 70's and mega clean) with a 13B turbo put into the engine bay and the odd dubber/kombi.Picky of the Benz about half way down this thread : http://www.autospeed.com/cgi-bin/aut...ml&ord=5787492

But, being a bloke who appreciates anything thats been put together well, some of those RX-3's were cutting some amazing figures, 8.09 @ 143 mph was the quickest I saw, all over 400 meters, and it was street registered in NSW and the noise the triple rotor 20B's make is awesome, as is the power. Archie from Toowoomba in a 20B powered series 6 rx-7 dedicated drag car only went .05 better than that at an 8.04 and 150+ mph. Awesome stuff.

Unfortunately, a small Suzi Mighty Boy (fully decked out RWD drag car)named "For some fun" got a wriggle on at about 3/4 track, and never really recovered from there, and put it into the wall in the braking area but the KE20 rotor powered Corolla he was racing managed to avoid him, pretty fancy manouver at 120 mph + .....then the next 2 cars almost repeated the performance, so the track was getting cleaned down nearly every run due to cars skating all about late in the arvo which got a touch tedious.

I have some photos (which need to be developed and are prolly crap) that I can send to GibGib if he feels you lot can tolerate some Jap car photos on these hallowed boards

    Hi Chipper

    I went to the Jambo.

Was an Awesome day. Biggest and best ever I reckon. Plenty of good quality women and good quality cars.

Was tempted to take the 17 down the strip, but being a stock motor I don't think it would be quicker then 16seconds. Don't get me wrong the standard donk stills pulls pretty good though.
Although next year after seeing all those cars I'm keen to get something going.

    13B powered R8 hehe

    Reno17,

    Top stuff hey?

I reckon you would have walloped the guy in his auto Accord

What amazed me the most was the fact these cars can pull wheelies, hook up unbelievably without breaking bits, and have rego plates on the back.

No, fraid not, an R8 would have to have a 13BT

    Yea

Saw that Red Honda, he was game to do that.

Yea I'd get quite a shock sitting at the lights and watching some RX 2 pull off with front wheels in the air. Be a hell of a sight.

Been done before you know, A rotory R8, don't know about 13B but definatly rotory, there was even a rotory powered R12 down here a long time ago.
There was a very nice conversion done on an R8 in Ballarat a few years ago, Alfa 2 litre but he had his rocker covers made to read RENAULT GORDINI and it looked real and fooled all those who saw it.

There was/is a guy up here in Briso a few years back who had a Citroen Club with a rotary under the hood. 2 radiators had to be used for some reason. I saw this car a few years in a row at the Bastille Day and he worked just around the corner. I reckon a little rotary powered frog car would go down a treat.

I was told a couple of years ago about a CX that had a Mazda rotary fitted to it in Adelaide way that had fitted a starter motor from an aeroplane to work the hydraulics; now that's keen.

Alright who wants to help me build a Wankel powered R8 ?

If they can put one in a 1970's Merk, surely its a 20min job for an R8.

Serioulsy I reckon it would'nt be that hard.
Be awesome to do. Thing would have some pepp.

i also remember seeing a 404 pug with a rotary in it at one stage
seemed like a very easy engine swap.
the last citroen i saw with an interesting swap was a light 15 with a renualt 16 engine in it with twin side draughts and hand made mufflers.i havent seen the car been driven around yet but have seen it in it's completed stage. hoping to get back down there one day very soon to catch up with him and see how he is going

I reckon with all this talent (myself excluded ) we should get an aussiefrogs car up to the Jambo next year, something that would make the crowd say "what the...."

Have to be RWD tho.....kinda narrows the selection down a bit.

    Hmm

If I get this big tax return back, I could start looking at conversions.

www.tas-performance.com.au Is the company who put together a 1967 Merk 13B Turbo powered.
Although the site is under construction You can ask them questions via E-mail.

    Chipper I'm hearing ya

I figured an R8 / R10 would be the car to do, as there rear wheel drive, and scrub up alright. I know a guy who is trying to flog one as well, for pretty cheep.

    Regards Ash

    Reno 17,

YEAH, forgot about the 10, 4 wheel discs as well so you can haul yourself down from the HUGE speeds it will get to.....and all that neg camber on the back too.......

A rotor would have to go close to fitting.

Got 12 months to find out

Good idea, go for it fellas, not much I can do from down here except give smart comments.
Go for an 8 not a 10, looks better, I once had an 8 with 4 headlight front,no bumpers and 15+7 inch rubber,it looked very tough.
One piont, with rear engine you get excellent traction, not the thing for burnouts, fit the motor mid mounted in the back seat driving an R12 box, not hard to do and cheap and easy to fix when (not if ) the diff breaks.

Yea I'm keen to give it a go.

R8 are very Rare. I know of a 10 for $1300 with a alpine motor in it.

Yea I agree R8's look better.

I'd Paint it french racing blue, or some other sort of factory colour and put a quiet exhaust on it then watch the jaws just drop.

    OK hows this idea,
a 10 with stock body, trims, bumbers, wheels, real daggy looking,
mid mounted 13B, R12 4 speed box, front mounted radiator with the air intake through the front number plate door, fuel tank will need to be in the boot, now here is the clever part, the motor sits in the back seat area so what you do is make a fake fibreglass seat and on the seat a couple of hollowed out suit cases stuck together so theres no evidence of whats underneith... sounds good to me, don't pay $1300 for a good 10, a $100 special is all you need.
    Seeya,
    David.

    LOL @ the hollow suitcases

I reckon a 100 buck special would be the way to go as well, but Ash, where is this 10 and are we talking Alpine V6?????...surely not

But a rear engined rotor powered 10 would have potential. I am not a rich man and can hardly afford to mod my 205, but, I am handy with a mexican speed wrench (hammer) and can even use a hot axe (oxy) and have a lot of people I can ask for help with ideas.

    David,

Do you really reckon a 12 box would fit a rotor?

This R10 has some sort of 1300cc R5 Alpine engine in it. Is advertised in the Trading Post has had some extensive mods done to it apparently.

Also fellas what sort of Gearbox would you use ?
Obviously you'd have to get an adapter plate made somewhere.

The 5 Alpine motor is a fantastic little engine, nearly as much power as a 17TL with a fraction of the weight, it would be a better alternative to 17 power in a 12, it would handle so much better, in a 10 or 8 it would be a quick club car. A bit of an overkill for what we are doing here. You can get an R10 for nearly nothing and a second hand 16TS or rotory and for less than a grand you could have a great fun car. You can get adaptor plates made up to fit any motor to any gearbox so really your only limited by the size of your wallet.
