THAT donut place...(Krispy Kreme)

[This post is more relevent to Sydney-siders I think, don't know if there is a store yet in other states]

What is with that donut place in Penrith?
There seems to be a lot of hype about it.
What do you think??
(Sorry..by doing this I am creating more hype as well...)

For those you don't, Krispy Kreme is a new (how new I don't know) donut shop in Penrith, and has 1/2 hour queues still around 12 midnight on weekends, and some people are buying 4-6 dozens or more.

They were selling them at UNSW last Thursday.

They had HEAPS of cartons of donuts something like $1.20 each or $10 for a box. People were queueing up like mad to buy them. I tried one and thought it was so sickeningly sweet it was disgusting.

Lots of people bought multiple cartons of them, and plenty of people were eating them on the buses heading to Central station.

Not a fan myself.

I've never had Krispy Kremes but it seems to be a love/hate thing. On a straw (and totally unscientific ) poll, it seems more people love it than hate it.

As far as I understand, they have some sort of unique process which creates large air bubbles in the doughnuts (somebody correct me on this?) which gives them a very light and fluffy feeling.

As for the queues, I hear they die down a bit at around 3am - so this is the best time to go mallet

I can see an Aussiefrogs 'Krispy Kreme' Run coming up.
You're not paranoid if everyone hates you.

Merrick & Rosso Unplanned (Ch 9, Wednesdays at 10:30pm) was sponsored by Krispy Kreme - although there were no ads.

god, your all softies, i have 2 when i'm there with what they call coffee and take 22 home.
between my sister, mum, dad and myself they are gone within 2 days.
nothing better than having 6 doughnuts and watching the wrc.

note* i'm still young and stupid and enjoying my metabolisum of a race horse.

Sounds all very american to me. If they are that sweet also after being microwaved they must be pumped fuill of chemicals and unhealthy preservatives and additives... frown

They are very big in america. I think i had them once or twice, but i can't remember much about them. American food all seems to be sweet and fatty and all blends into everything else. The only 2 chain stores that stand out in my mind were "jack in a box" who made an awsome tripple cheese burger with 3 different types of cheese which was to die for dance (though garanteed to send you to a early grave if you have it too much mallet ) and the great "Tony Roma's" rib's resteraunt dance which i believe we now have 2 of in sydney, though i havnt managed to get to the sydney ones! Then again ribs are good at a lot of places, but it was good to go to the original in san fransisco! head_ban

Well I went out there on the sunday and it was packed. It was interesting actually, so much hype over a bit of dough and the place was so american it wasnt funny.
Penrith is getting like a hick town in the USA with all these fast food chains, that dont exist anywhere else.
Shame really. But it was an interesting time out there....The c3 went well on the freeway with the climate control going. "Ah serenity......." blush

Don't worry Nick, they have plans for more of the same in Melbourne before too long see http://www.iht.com/articles/100442.html (click on the next page link when you get there).

Probably have one on top of Uluru before too long.

Ah the wonders of chain food - first we get hamburgers that you'd chuck straight in the bin if you bought them at a proper fish and chip shop, then its four year old dead chook, then dishwater coffee, and now its sugar saturated donuts!

Sadly, no doubt people will buy them in vast numbers, just like they buy the Herald Sun and watch channel 9 news and cruddy US sit coms.

Sigh!

Cheers

Whoah, what's wrong with Channel 9 news? Yes, they're after ratings and sometimes lack depth, but I think 7 news is definitely more of a worry... 2_cents mallet

There are two news services worthy of the name on Australian TV, Richard. Neither of them are on a "commercial" channel.
