Brass Troubles. calling all Brass !! ;)

Im a trombone player at heart... but dug up an old baritone to play with..

im having a lot of difficulty getting the tunning slide out however...

It hasnít been used for quite some time.. and as you could imagine.. is quite filthy..

So i undertook this cleaning mission before i experiment with the lovely warm sounds a tenor horn can make... But as i said.. the tunning slide is stuck.. And well. Wont be much use to me if i cant tune it..

It has been soaking in warm bubbly water for about 7+ hours now.. and it still wont budge...

any other tricks.. i should try before forcing it out with a hammer.. Which I relay donít wish to do.. In fear of bending all the plumbing wink

    A fellow trombone player.

    Hazaa

Bass? I used to love my bass, had to give it back to the school though. Still got my original standard one though.

Even some wd-40 or something similar. Is the slide stainless steel? If so just about anything should go, just make sure that it is all cleaned out.

    Long live the trombone

Maybe one of the ultrasonic cleaning devices would help.

Might be worth trying some bicard of soda solution? It usually gets gunk off brass.

    Cheers

I didn't think I'd ever see a trombone post here. I'm actually a trombone player by trade. Yes, that's my job.

A little bit of tapping with your mouthpiece around the tuning slide may loosen it up... light tapping!

I usually read this forum too not hear about trombone!

Oxy-Acetylene torch should do the trick.

In all seriousness though, you need to get the outer tube hotter than the inner, so it expands more. Rap ice (bag of frozen peas) around the lot for 15-20 mins., then pour boiling water over it, whilst pulling.

I sold out years ago, I'm a musical prostitute. I do a lot of the musicals, TV adverts, all the stuff that pays. Long tours out of town etc. Sometimes it's great..... You know what a brass instrument is like though, it runs your life. Damn trombone.

say no to hammers on tuning slides!!!!!.The best way to pull slides is with the hot/cold method,a little solvent, and a bloody good grip.Try passing a tea towl or rag through slide and pulling off that. beats burning or freezing your hand. dont try and use every bit of your manly strength! or you can end up distorting the valve casing (terminal),or pulling the sleeve of the slide.

Another method could be to heat all the effected area, and then spray a freeze it spray down the inner section if possible. These sprays are available at electronics stores, such as Dick Smith or Jaycar.
    cheers!
