After it has been started once it will then start pretty easily.

It seems that the auto choke is either on or not.

The car smells rich and wakes me up in the morning, hence my post.

    Any ideas?

    thanks

    Carby model, isn't it?

Is there petrol leaking out of the float bowl, leaving it empty for that first start? Look for staining (was easier when we had real petrol!) down the manifold...

Is there petrol leaking from the float bowl into the manifold somehow? Perhaps through the accelerator pump?

Is the fuel pump defective and letting petrol syphon back out of the line to the carby? Shouldn't give these symptoms really, but if it starts then stops, this could be the go.

Is the starter draining too much power cold and thereby preventing the ignition from firing?

Try a temporary direct wire to the coil from the battery when it's cold some time. If this is it, rig a relay in that direct line that's operated by the starter lead (ie. run a wire from the starter wire to the relay)... this is a trick I've learned is good with 504s.

The auto choke really shouldn't be an issue. petrol in the manifold to flood it and the accelerator right down always starts an engine that's going to run. If it really is flooding from a carby leak, try starting it with the foot down and the choke off first up.

    Thanks for the info.

    Yes its a carbie model

Will try the coil to battery direct wire trick.

Would overly rich fuel foul the plugs? I assume that it would.

    Thanks

Just a quick question on the same car?

Car won't stay in gear atm (auto). Likes to stay in second for too long?

Seems that the kickdown cable is to blame?

Anyone got any ideas? I know its not french, but its the daily driver atm

    thanks

83 Camira, amazed it's still running - let it die gracefully.

New tires and a tank full of gas ... just about doubled in value.

What ever gets you from A-B is all the counts - keep it long enough in good nick it'll be a collectors item. Wouldn't be surprised if soneone has one stored under wraps somewhere.

Ok I see the problem, it hasn't been squashed into a metal cube yet, get that done, and the world is your oyster....
