    Upcoming New Models

    My favourite motorshow is just around the corner, IAA Frankfurt in about a fortnight, so I'm interested in knowing what interesting new models are on the way.

    Do the French have anything new and interesting lined up? I've heard there's probably going to be a facelifted Laguna there (with the new corporate nose as seen on the Clio, Espace, Megane II, etc).

    I had been anticipating the 407 at Frankfurt quite keenly, but I've just read the <a href="http://www.iaa.de/Englisch/medien/images/Pressekonferenzen_eng.pdf" target="_blank">press schedule</a> and unfortunately I don't think it's coming at Frankfurt. Maybe Geneva?

    Otherwise, the only other Frog I'm interested is the C4 (when's that due?). New Clio should probably be around in just over a year.

    BTW, here is a <a href="http://www.autoweek.nl/forum/list.php?f=12" target="_blank">good forum</a> for various scoops.

    Whilst we're on the topic of new models, I thought I'd reply to an old thread here. Here's what will be one of the stars of the show at IAA in my books.

    danielsydney:
    What about the new S40 its very good? 2_cents
    It looks good

    <img src="http://www.swedespeed.com/resources/downloads/wallpaper/s40/wp1/640x480.jpg" alt=" - " />

    <img src="http://www.swedespeed.com/resources/downloads/wallpaper/s40/wp2/640x480.jpg" alt=" - " />

    <img src="http://www.swedespeed.com/resources/gallery/cars/04_s40/interior/large/01.jpg" alt=" - " />

    Starting engines, a 6 speeder 164kW 2.5T 5 cylinder & 100kW 2.0T 4 cylinder diesel. AWD available, petrol 4 cylinder models to be launched in 2004. I'd imagine with the 2.5 turbo 5 potter, 6 speed manual and its Focus II based chassis it'd be great to drive.

    Sales target is 70,000 cars for 2004. Sales commence in Sweden in 2003, rest of the world 2004. Australia mid 2004.

    Interior is interesting, there's actually some form of storage area behind the "floating" centre console. If you look at the centre console, it's only a few cms thick and isn't enclosed.

    The new Volvo S40 is shorter than old S40, but it is larger in every other respect:

    Length 4468 mm (48 mm shorter than the previous S40 model)
    Width 1770 mm (54 mm wider)
    Height 1452 mm (44 mm taller)
    Wheelbase 2640 mm (78 mm longer) - same length as an old 240.
    Track front 1535 mm (63 mm wider)
    Track rear 1531 mm (57 mm wider)

    Can't wait to drive one!

    There should also be a "preview" of the 407 in the form of an "Elixir" concept car - <a href="http://www.thecarfanatics.com/CFn/peugeot_160803_elixir.cfn.html" target="_blank">http://www.thecarfanatics.com/CFn/peugeot_160803_elixir.cfn.html</a>

    One of those Clios looks like it has pinched a bit from the Peugoet CC.

    Ahh yes, but Rod, it reminds me of a boiled sweet that's been spat out Personally I prefer the new Renault BeBop. Looks funky.

    <img src="http://www.autoweek.nl/images/Articles/1784/bebop1.jpg" alt=" - " />

    <img src="http://www.autoweek.nl/images/Articles/1784/bebop3.jpg" alt=" - " />

    The Clio cabrio is very 307CC esque.

    Anyway, continuing with the new cars, seeing we have a good handful of Focus fans here:

    Ford Focus II

    <img src="http://bilder.autobild.de/bilder/1/37503.jpg" alt=" - " />

    This isn't an official pic, but it seems quite conservative looking for a Focus - almost seems plain and unoffensive. I suspect the front is right, as it's the same as the Focus C-Max. I'm a bit disappointed to be honest.

    Mazda 3

    <img src="http://www.mme-press.com/pics/mazda3_49_prev.jpg" alt=" - " />

    Post Mazda 6, Mazda are heading in the right direction IMHO. The family feel is there.

    Laguna II Update

    <img src="http://www.autotriti.gr/pages/31_2003/03.T31.laguna.01b.jpg" alt=" - " />

    A Greek impression, with the addition of the new corporate Renault nose to the car.

    C5 Update

    Is this a new nose for the C5?

    Seat Altea

    Just for something different.

    Apart from the Renault and the SEAT (I nearly posted that one myself) they really are a pretty uninspiring looking lot, aren't they. The Focus, the Lada and the Mazda all look about as interesting as three slices of processed cheese!

    Cheers

    The Lada's interior is funny, are they trying to become Russia's answer to VW Notice the badge on the rear, status. I hope they don't try the Proton "Asia's answer to BMW" type advertising message, then again, Lada had a brand new model partially designed by Porsche by the end of the 80s but never had the funds to make it reality.

    Out of the rest in the above two posts, the Mazda would get my pick. The Focus just seems too conservative for the fun car it is. Naturally, I think the S40's the best looking on that platform, but I don't want to know how much those 18" P-Zeros cost to replace.

    It will be interesting to see what the Elixir looks like, certainly in recent times, Peugeot's concept cars have had many strong clues to the designs of their production cars.

    BTW - this month's Wheels has a spy pic of what they think the C4 will look like, if anyone's interested I can scan it.

    You mean, that one with the VW roof line, Fiat 850 sports rear and early Ssangyong (or is it just contemporary Daewoo) nose?

    wink

    Sorry, Justin, but that makes 4 slices of processed cheese for me.

    Gee, if people have complained about anything regarding the new S40, it's the fact it's got quite a few similarities to its S60 brother. Ssangyong/Daewoo similarity at the nose <img src="http://www.vvspy.com/w-agora4/icons/icon21.gif" alt=" - " /> , bah - S80, S60, V70 all have this nose.

    Justin I was thinking mnore of the nose of the current Kalos:

    <img src="http://www.tiscali.co.uk/motoring/roadtests/images/rtdaewookalos2.jpg" alt=" - " />

    or the Musso

    <img src="http://www.donatosistemas.com.ar/Contenido/E-Shop/Musso/Musso_Fotos/thumbnails/dsc_044.bmp" alt=" - " />

    The rear of the Fiat 850:

    <img src="http://www.carproductions.com.au/garage/car85009s.jpg" alt=" - " />

    and the roofline of the 2000 Passat

    <img src="http://images.cardomain.com/member_img_b/302000-302999/302361_3_full.jpg" alt=" - " />

    Looking harder, I'm really being a bit unfair. Its more year 2000 Passat than anything else really.

    And yes. The distinctive bits of it do sadly look rather like some of its big brothers too ! Ah! Volvos, Justin. Where would we be without them!

    wink

    Cheers

    the s40 looks good (nose is a little 2 brutal)...the headlights (audiesque with a touch of bmw indicators)are great...i wonder if the next generation falcon will carry similar units...almost guaranteed...heard it here first...the rest of the cars look pretty crap...must admit volvo is one of the better looking cars (who would have thought this day would come)...mazda 6 is a great car 2 but (just like the chicken and the egg)which came first the honda accord or the mazda 6????they lookk soo soo similar....

    Have to agree with Rod,

    Totally uninspiring, are we really going to notice most of these cars when they hit the streets 'same old same old' with of course the exception of the 'Airlounge' (mood lighting being one of the features highlighted, give me a break) and the 'BeBop' the latter of which is trying too hard, hate that teardrop side glass. We must be moving further and further into safe and conservative disappro

    The Mazda 6 was released before the Accord Euro. I think the Accord Euro looks like a classier car thatn the 6 - both are nice looking cars. The fronts of both cars are very very similar though, the Honda's is somewhat more angular. The rear of the Accord is somewhat similar to the rear of the previous generation Camry, but somehow Honda made it much better looking.

    Had a good gawk at the Accord Euro in the carpark, the panel gaps are simply superb. Whilst I didn't sit in the car, I can understand why people are attracted to the car, it's brilliant value - it's probably the only Honda I like at the moment. Plus I think the interior is a little less wanky than that in the Mazda 6 with its metallic overkill, and I'm not a fan of Altezza style rear lights.

    Honda execs must be really happy though. MTD sales have gone up 20x over last year! A friend called up for some advice today, as it's new car time. He was looking at the Accord, but there's a 3 month wait and he needs a car soon.

    Never fun waiting for a car, you can't haggle as much off and it doesn't help when you see the model you ordered being driven by somewhere else I waited 2 months, but I know there's another Aussiefrogger who waited 5 Then there's another one who waited almost 8 months, thanks to the dealer crashing the car on delivery frown
