    What's in a GTi name ?

    Question.

What Pugs have brandished the GTi Badge?

    I know of:

    • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial"> 206GTi
    • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial"> 306GTi-6
    • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial"> 205GTi (various changes)
    • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial"> 206GTi-180 (soon)
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">What are the others ? Are there Peugeots that could have been labelled GTi (eg. 406-Mi16) and didn't, are they "true" GTi's?

Isn't GTI just a name? Hyundi could stick a body kit on a 's'excel and call it a GTI couldnt they?

I guess what it comes down to is the intent for the car, in which case the S16 and the Mi16 both qualify, however in most cases the GTI badge is attributed to hatches rather than sedans.

Didn't the badge GTI first start being used when electronic fuel injection became all the rage? People knew that EFI cars were (more than likely to) able to perform better.

All those GTI's listed are defiantely EFI cars, and initially it was GTi wasn't it? The i signifying injected...

    Just a though

Yep, something like Grand Touring Injection?

A while ago I saw a british TV show and someone on it had a 406 "GTI", however I've never found any references to one anywhere else.

I believe that GTi is derived from the original "GT" badge, as someone mentioned meaning "Grand Touring" or "Grand Tourer", which was used on many makes and models of cars to represent a comfortable performance-inclined vehicle.

The "i" is added to indicate fuel injection. This doesn't necessarily mean electronic fuel injection, as shown by the existence of the 505 STi and early 505 GTi which both used mechanical fuel injection.

As for the criteria allowing a car to have a GTi badge - A Wheels article on the 505 GTi said that the increase in power from 84.5kW in the STi to 94kW in the Gti "should justify the addition of that GTi badge...", so I guess we could probably assume that any car with over 90kW and some sporty pretensions could be classified as a GTi...?

    Cheers,
    Richard

Mind you I must say...and I have an article somewhere which said this...

Does an Automatic 505 GTI really meet the requirements to be called a GTI..

Also it reminds me of 2 other of these...

    504 TI
    and
    504 LTI

The TI stood for Touring Injection *as it was an injection*

and LTI stood for Limited Touring Injection *I think*

    Cheers

think back to the first commodes with an SL badge
    where was the super luxury
we all know that GL = grand luxury or luxe as in the 403/404 luxe models that we never got here

what would GR and SR be then ???
