What does engine knock sound like??

My Clio isn't running well at the moment and there is a abnormal noise coming from the engine bay or under the car somewhere, not regular, once in a couple of minutes or so. Sounds like the moment the A/C is swtiched on, that "switch on" sound only a lot louder. Is it knocking?? If not, what could it be?

    (I'm using 80% Optimax / 20% BP-Ultimate at the moment)

Knocking or pinging or pinking, whatever you want to call it is best described thus:

It sounds like a handfull of buttons being shaken around in a tin can
It's a very harsh metallic sound. A Clio may or may not pink in the split second after a full throttle take-off for example. That's the only time I'd ever hear it in my 306's... as the ECU adjusts the timing to stop the pinking.

Have you physically checked the air conditioning compressor and its mounts?

Also the clutch in the pulley... I think I'd be starting my search for the problem in these regions.

Or is it some other time... other than when you turn on the A/C... I guess it seems that it is.

A general search for things that might be loose or out of place might be in order then...

Our Nissan S-Cargo had a nasty rattle that disappeared when you turned on any electrical load - I thought that the alternator might be on the way out - turned out that the bottom pulley was about to fall apart - lucky we caught it as the timing belt would have let go with the usual consequences dead

Car is in dealers for repairs ...
    Hope all will be fine.

(For details of the problem please see my thread under "Clio running with 3 or 2 cylinders" in the Renault forum.
