Frogs in Targa Tsamania 2003

I was browsing through the pictures of the first pictures of Targa Tasmania 2003 and spotted these;

It looks like Gerald Cullen has ditched the 405 Mi16 and built a 306 GTi6. It looks awesome!

Gerald and Rod still have the Mi16. They are planning to run both cars with their sons next year. I would rather he sells the 405 to me, so I can fly the Pug flag in Tassie.

The Renault's only 2 wheel drive though! Now if they'd done it properly... Heard somewhere (could've been this forum I don't know - so I'm not ripping you off, I just have a memory like a sieve) that someone rebuilt a 205T16 for $600,000
imported to NZ and rallied it in a rally over there, but was out second day with gearbox problems! Want!! tongue

The P205 T16 WRC Evo 1 is owned & driven by Peter Johnstone. He previously had a MG Metro 6R4 Turbo, which took him a couple of years to sort, but eventually he claimed 2nd overall in Targa NZ with that car.
In March he also had gearbox trouble, and only just finished with a max. time on last stage. He owns Genuine Vehicle Imports, an importer of special & classic rally cars, and is a sponsor to Targa NZ.
He has the resources and determination to sort the T16 as well. It is fast and grippy. He has had the turbo output reduced to make car more controllable to drive. When the rear body shell is tilted back for access to mechanicals, the engine looks tiny. Its a 1.8 litre with a BIG turbo.
Check out Targa NZ website www.targa.co.nz for photos from 2002 TNZ and 2003 T.Bambina.
Cheers

Hello everyone. I have just returned from the last stage of Targa. Bloody Jim Richards won again. How monotonous.
I didn't see the R5, or the Clio Sport. I saw the 206cc, 306, and R17.

Hey all,

sorry, it's a Renault 5 Turbo, and apparently they came as 2 wheel drive not 4 wheel drive. I DID see the Clio Sport but not the 5, but what I saw that really blew my pants off was the Ford RS200, apparently 500kW eek! out of that baby!! HOW?!?! That thing was amazing. I'll try to get some pics posted soon.

The 5 Turbo did not finish.
The RS200 was awesome though.
Probably the loudest car of all was a Holden Monaro HQ which lost its exhaust. VERY loud!

The R17 finished in 55th position in the Classic competition, the R5 did not finish.
In the Modern competition, the 206cc come home in 62nd place, the 306 Gti6 in 64th, the Clio Sport in 92nd.

Whats the story with those RS200's? They used to rally them things back in the 80's but how come there were never any road models? Is'nt there a rule in rallying where in order for a particular model to compete, the manufacturer has to build a stipulated number of cars for the road for Homologation with the FIA? Or is that just for GT/LeMans cars?

CORRECT

only built them to win races.. never intented on making them public accesable in large quantities..

then a few went and killed some poor drivers.. and group B was Scratched .. ..

oh what some cars came out of that era tho..

They built enough for homologation but did sell some for road use as well as rallycross in UK and Europe which at the time was a huge sport.

Some of the RS200's have found their way to Japan as playtoys for the very wealthy.

When I lived in the Uk I knew someone who rallycrossed one. At that time you could buy road versions if you had the money but they were obviously limited editions from the factory.

Guys
Who are the crew of the 206CC that piloted that modest sporting Pug to a respectable placing in Targa? What is their background and what mods did the 206CC have for Targa, espec. performance mods? For HP, weight and chassis suitability they would have surely been at a disadvantage to Rod & Gerald in their 306GTi-6, but managed to finish 2 places and many minutes better.

Well from looking at the Targa book, the 206cc had "showroom" spec and an unstated power output. Driver and navigator are husband and wife, Don and Margie McIntrye, both from tas and "work" as adventurers for the Ocean Frontiers group, probably run it I'd say.

In the paper down here (the Mercury) there was an article before Targa on before the event on how they were taking donations to "sponsor a teddy" so that they'd put a teddy bear in their car each competition day and the money raised went to a charity at the end of the event.

The car was in Autobarn (Hobart's local race/rally prep people) a couple of times and I went and had a gawk inside. It was remarkably stock, the only differences I saw being the trip computer and the roll cage. From what I remember it had hardly been stipped.

The 306Gti6 on the other hand has 124kW, was raced by two directors (Rod King and Gerald Cullen) from QLD, was run in the Limited Modified category, and had the mystery of the missing bumber. I never saw under the bonnet of either car so I can't say much more. I know from someone's previous post that apparently the people running the 306 had a 405mi16 in last year.

The only thing with regards to placings I can suggest is that the 206 had been in Rally Tas 03 and the Octagon Series before Targa, so the owners had more time to get used to the car.

Regards,

Chris.
