    Music and Driving.

    Pinched from another topic.

If you had to name your favourite tune(s) for driving fast and aggressively.. and your favourite tune(s) for "chillin" out while driving. What would they be ?

And anyone suggest the Zoom, Zoom song ala Mazda, get off ! (don't worry all recent Mazda MX5 owners were sent a copy a few weeks ago).

evil Fast: New Order, Electronic, Boxcar, Prodigy, PSB's - anything with 120+ BPM.

Chillin': Jazz ... vocals of Diana Krall, Patrica Kaas, Ella Fitzgerald, even Frankie "Blue Eyes" Sinatra.

So does the music of our youth (and on the airwaves) have anything to do with the aggressiveness on our roads .. maybe question

    For a real good drive?

A good blasting version of the 1812 Overture with real cannons. There was a version from about 1964 that has excellent stereo separation. cheers!

Or Phil Kelsall at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom Wurlitzer Organ! dance

For a cool a relaxing drive, yeah Diana Krall, Eva Cassidy, Janet Seidel, Vince Jones.

I could go on, but I don't think this is the reaction XTC206 expected. whistle

for any fast/angry driving i find a bit of speedcore techno not bad when it tops out at 1000 bpm, or sometimes a bit of Rammstein.
But for chilln' i dont mind Santana or just 'normal' music

Stuck on GOLD FM ( Classic Rock 60's--80's), agressive is stupid & dangerous. Although having said that the content of drive time broadcasts, seems to be livelier & a more agressive, stay awake type music.

Yeah, I leave my radio on Gold most of the time. But that's because I like to sing (rather badly) along with the songs on it blush .

For aggressive driving, something like foo fighters, blink 182, stuff like that.

For 'chilling', I usually reach for the oldies like Meatloaf or Queen , or something more jazzy/soul like Diana Krall, Aretha Franklin, and other stuff like Chris Isac (spelling?)

For fast driving, I like Drum & Bass, no lyrics to take your mind off the road, just meodies.

For cruising, Fleetwood Mac, Phil Collins, Jimmy Eat World, Lifehouse,
B to the R to the A from the D

Coming across the the Nullabor in an ailing 403 many years back I reckon it was only Canned Heat ("On the road again") and The Doors that kept us going! ("Keep your mind on the road and your hand upon the wheel.....Let's roll, baby, roll..") The decibel level helped keep my mind and ears off the hole in one of the pistons too!

Seem to remember Paddi Smith figuring pretty significantly in that trip too.

The Mozart clarinet concerto is a mighty fine piece equally at home for a soothing trip on a clogged freeway or a sunny country road.

Early Dylan is pretty hard to beat if you want to sing along. Or Catatonia for something with a bit of more contemporary bite in the lyrics.

    Cheers

Sounds like a fun trip, Rod... glad the water pump wasn't leaking!

Has anyone ever seen the Pirelli promotional movie called The Tortoise and The Hare?

The song through that one, in accompaniment of the long haired blonde travelling the Autostrada in an E-type, is Keep on Running... a very catchy tune.

Now, when there's a good road with fast bends and no traffic about, I can wind up a little and I can bring that tune to bear... it sort of fits with the whole scene of taking precise lines and clipping the apexes right, being neat and very fast.

If it is a decent car, it makes its own music on a good drive, anything else would be superfluous......

As much as the sweet note of a BX with a leaky exhaust is, in its' own unique way, a beautiful form of music, I'm always fond of making my own 'driving cds' up - guaranteed to make you drive 25km/h faster, or your money cheerfully refunded!

    head_ban

    Spiritualized - Electricity
Supergrass - Sitting Up Straight / Time / Alright / Sun Hits the Sky
    MC5 - Ramblin' Rose / Come Together
    Rail - Sheela-na-gig
    Radiohead - Maquiladora
Jeff Buckley - Kick Out The Jams
Even - Purple Nazz / Uncommonwealth / Weatherking
Cream - SWLABR / Deserted Cities of the Heart (live)
Black Crowes - Hard to Handle
    JSBX - Afro
Ocean Colour Scene - Can't Get Back to the Baseline / Riverboat Song / Hundred Mile High City
You Am I - Forever and Easy (live)

As far as complete albums go, the best for cruising long distances would have to be Radiohead's 'The Bends', and Pink Floyd's 'Meddle', and for a complete hard driving experience, try Rocket Science's 'Welcome Aboard the 3C10', and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's 'Xtra Acme USA'.

...not that I would ever advocate speeding, of course wink

No, but the car was overheating pretty dramatically. Had the heater on full despite the 100+ degrees C outside temperature.

Earlier on I'd smashed a windscreen near Kunanurra and had to travel on to Port Headland before I could replace it. (Roughly the same distance as Melbourne to Brisbane for those who aren't familiar with WA) .

At least it kept us a bit cooler, but being continually hit in the face by swarms of native bees didn't add to the comfort levels. These particular native bees only sting a little bit, but it still gets tiresome after a while. Mind you the occassional large black beetle in the eye was probably worse.

    Ah, the joys of youth.

PR you are a legend. I assume this is the version from about 1964 or so. I tracked down the Decca CD number today and the dmn thing dropped off their list in 1996.

I have an LP player and CD burner. What risks are you willing to take re sending the LP to me for a while? (at my cost of course) whistle

Definately Foo fighters or Green day. Green Day got me round Europe on Autostradas quite satisfactorily. If I'm going to have a crash I will put The Cure on.
