    Drove a FF yesterday !

Oran Park organised a L2S practice session yesterday. Whilst there I met two fellow Club Lotus Australia members. Both in Formula Fords...

Being poorly attended there were long stretches where the track was empty, and I got my chance to drive a Forumla Ford belonging to Colin Campbell.

    ooooh, the rush...

About 2~4 laps to get aquainted with the floppy H pattern (there is no spring return for the gear levers in the open wheelers), tiny brake pedals that sit 1 inch away from the accelerator and clutch pedals. The very firm dog box gear changes, and the acceleration out of the corners!
Nothing prepared me for the direct steering in those things though. Twist of the wrist and you are heading in different direction to what you were doing a second ago, no protest from the tyres, it just happens.
It seems like you are driving a supercharged version of the gokart but in the lying position with just the visor of the helmet above the rim of the side walls. The rear brake bias is also very pronounced with 80% of the weight behind the driver.

The buzz is incredible, and now I can appreciate the grins most open wheeler drivers wear when they finally slide out of the cockpits at the end of the session.

BIG thanks to Colin for the offer of the drive yesterday. If you know him and see him hug him for me. wink

    cheers

And just imagine how good it would have been if they'd used the 16TS engine instead of that overweight, bulky, old fashioned and unreliable Ford?

Oran park is a brown pants moment ! wink

I was taking it easy, and got it sideways few times coming out of the corners but it is very easy to correct. I was having awesome time letting the tail hang out a tad on the exit of the corners but with the owner watching I really didnt want to push the limits. 8~10 laps is hardly enough to get a proper feel for the car, but the buzz remains. I can definately see myself in one of those some time in the future.

Don't do it... at least with a Formula Ford!

Build yourself a Clubman, more power, less cost, easier to work on, faster.
