    We are upgrading forum software

    Not entirely sure when yet.

We are licenced for vBulletin to steer away from CGI which hogs processor power from our host (DCSI) & doesn't allow easy spidering for most web search engines.

The new software is database driven & has many useful features, infact it's quite amazing!

For instance, there is a calendar that members can add events to, upload your own avatar when you want, file attachments to post & it goes on.

I did a test run on another forum I have to check merging from UBB to vB a few weeks ago.
There were some issues with member files due to the avatar addition we have now, this version of UBB isn't supposed to have avatars & an extra line has been added to every member's file.

The other problem is the post dates. When posts were brought across they all had "posted 1st of January 1970". This is a bad thing eek!
I'm thinking this has to do with the "last post by" addition, which again this version of software is not supposed to have.

Anyway you can take a preview of the "bitsa" site that resulted from my experiment. If anyone knows more about the problems I've encounted please let me know as it will save some time.

    <a href="http://www.agnes-water.com/forum/index.php" target="_blank">http://www.agnes-water.com/forum/index.php</a>

Another thing, as it looks like I may have to manually remove lines from every members' file I may go through & delete all members who have never posted or who haven't posted in a long time. I'll let you know for sure soon.

    Looks very good gibgib

Keep us posted! Hope it works smoothly. Has someone written some sort of import routine for moving from UBB to vBulletin?

    I think <a href="http://www.vpmag.com/yssy/" target="_blank">this board</a> uses the same board software.

It's pretty good - one of the features I like is that everyone gets a 250kb upload allowance, which is useful for those who don't have webspace.

    It looks fresher too.

Keep up with the good work and as I've said before lets thank dcsi for giving us a home in cyberspace.

Yes importing is a matter of a few clicks. It took about 5 minutes to move the piddly one as the example so I imagine the 'ole AF shouldn't be off the air for more than 1 hour. The again we are talking about computers so better pencil in 48 hours just incase :p

Awesome stuff Gibgib.....I've been a vBull fan for a while.

I hope you can export/import without losing any important data.

Does this mean we can have a chat window with a link at the top of the page? I don't use ordinary chat rooms, but another forum I am on has a tag at the top of the page showing how many people are in the room, and I sometimes drop in to have a little chat with the other members. It is a lot of fun.

That would be good for new people that dont have a website. There needs to be some provision for people that want to load up pics and stuff...

Gibgib, you have been busy, all looks good, wish I could help but it's not really my area of expertise. Let me know if there is basic hack work, I work well under instruction whip

    Cheers

    She'll be right.
48 hours is worst case (I hope!).

Intending on an all-nighter say starting at 2AM or similar. You will all rise to greet the morning refreshed after your slumber, login (you'll keep your current user info) & enjoy.

This should all happen in the next week.

I will be stopping all new registrations shortly & deleting any that have 0 postings on or before March 2003. I can then get stuck into editting.
Any changes made to your signature or member info after this time will not venture across.

Does anyone know of a mass find/file/edit program that can incorporate a backspace in the command (ie. to remove the additional line & delete the paragraph it created) ?

    Also, our data is safe.
I backup at an undisclosed time every month.
Worst case we could lose 3 or 4 weeks worth of post data.
Obviously I'll be backing up before calling the removalists in here at 2 in the morning.

Is the green colour up for negotiation ? <runs, ducks, hides> ... or is negotiation two options - like it or leave ? What other colour scheme options are available to us.

I think there can be up to 3 colour templates with this new forum. You choose which one you like in your profile for the way the whole forum looks. Pretty cool huh.
Wonder how many are "lean on the green"?

I use quite a few forums that use this software.

    Quite good.

Have seen some initial problems, but after they are resolved its much better, a little cleaner also i feel.

    Looking forward to it?

Any chance of an email to members when the site is going down?

    thanks
