    Froggy Box repairs

Hey guys just wondering if anyone in SE Qld has expierence with a certain gearbox repairer. who knows what there doin with wierd stuff, eg French.

I was goin to go through French Car care, but all there goin to do is strip the gearbox, then pass it on to the gearbox shop and charge me $400 for doin that.

Its for my R17 4 speed unit.

Its making a shit of a noise, which = $$$$$

Its annoying cause most places I've tried are closed for another couple of weeks, and I'm wainting to get it goin as soon as posible.

    Thanks

Gee's you can buy entire R17's for less than $400bucks.

Just get another gearbox somewhere on the cheap (buy a whole bloody car for less than $400 if you have to for spares). Just change the Box's over yourself, I've done lots of R12 box's and there not difficult. Just undo the bell housing bolts, slide under the car, drop the box onto your chest and drag it out. Do the same to refit.

There's a guy on the Gold Coast that I made some enquiries about for a friend via "R17G" a couple of weeks back. He's at Miami & I used to work with him at the Renault/Peugeot dealers back around 1979/80 so he's what you'd call experienced and is a Renault specialist.
If he couldn't do a box on a Renault by now, I'm sure by now he could point you in the direction of someone who could. He's also the type of guy who is price concious so he wouldn't go the arm & leg approach.

    Reno17,

I suspect French Car Care would be using The Gearbox Shop at Woolloongabba, if they are open on thursday might be worth a call. Can't really give you a recommendation though I have only used them once on a 203pug box many years ago.

Gotta go it's time for my a_drink a_drink a_drink cheers!

Denis at French CC has rebuilt heaps of boxes and I doubt he would start sending them out now. The pinion bearing normally dies and a press is needed to remove the gears on the mainshaft to get to it. An R12 box can be converted to R17 fairly easily, although if you have got that far you might as well fix yours. Mark Bird in the RCCQ may be interested in doing it for you. Give me a call.

    Thanks Alan,
I got a call from the guy today, he said gears 3 and 4th are pretty cactus.
I'm goin to let him have a look at the 395 5 speed if the gears are the same, I might let him take the bits out of there, I dont really wanna but if there different I'll look at trying to fit the five speed into the R17.

Not to sure if I'm up to fitting it though.

    Ash,
I think the sunwheels and sidecarriers will swap from your box to the 395, allowing you to use your 17 driveshafts. You still will have to find a gearshift, and make a rear mount. Far from impossible.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the only differences between the R17TL box and the R12 box the input shaft and bell housing. Both of which are easy to change if you get another R12 box.
As Alan said, you'd be better off changing the sunwheels an sde carriers into the 395 box giving you 5 speeds rather than spending big buck fixing the 352 box.

In a nutshell yes, but the 15TS/17TL gearbox has a higher diff ratio 3.55 as opposed to 3.77 in the 12 box, with all other ratios similar. Put a stock 12 box in a 17 and it is very undergeared.
